Yevette asked if I recorded it just now and, nope, I didn't. She was asking after I had gone seeking some rat love ... but I get ahead of myself.
There is a campaign going on with the bass player to get him to lighten up as he keeps overdriving the monitors and overheating them. The first move was to disconnect him from the mixer / looper to plug him directly into the primary mixer. That was adjusted a little on the bass amp simulator to get levels to where he was behaving well.
So now do that going through the mixer / looper kit.
The result was improved but it still went to hell when I added some keys. There is something subtle about the way the two signals are being combined in the looper as that shouldn't result in clipping. That's the whole value of a looper is that you can combine signals without clipping them so something is unusual and it's a drawn-out battle trying to find out where it lies.
(Ed: maybe the looper really is more busted than you're hoping?)
That's a big sigh answer as it might be true. Everything else has to be exhausted before believing it and right now I don't. It's definitely wounded but I don't believe the looper is dead yet.
So the only way to validate is to put a bass line down on the looper, add some keys to it, and then go to town on the guitar. I already knew the combination wasn't full working before I picked up the guitar but I was thinking, screw it, I'm going to get at least some string time out of this.
That wasn't going to come out well as in it comes to the point of, man, this completely fucking sucks and that's what led up to rat love. Let's hear some rats using the guitar alone through the looper and make it rip. Then what happens.
And so "I Love Rats" got highly aggressive and highly loud. That's what Yevette asked about recording but by that time I wasn't even remotely thinking about cameras. I just wanted some string time for why I started playing a guitar in the first place. I didn't want to be testing things or checking things, I just wanted to hear the Galaxy Guitar do what she does.
It's ok that I didn't record it as the chords were too loud so the lead line wasn't as strong as I wanted for it but the sound overall was thunderous, I liked the moves, and nothing overheated.
The reason for the explanation is I'm copping a reputation for laziness but it's only because you can't see this part.
Something that might be good video would run long but it still might be good to film the work-up for "Colorful" as it will be in a sequence in which the bass is looped, then the B3 organ will get looped into it, and then clean guitar chords will get added to that. Then it will be stopped and the entire thing will be copied to the second phrase and there I will add a loop with distortion guitar chords on it. There third phrase will be some variation on the progression for some whizbang lead guitar playing. This recording isn't the time for the lead playing as the final step on this is to check it out with the vocal so sing it.
So, the steps are to battle with the Bass Player again and hopefully it's a victory next time as there was progress this time but not enough. If he's clean enough next time then I can go forward and shooting the video I just described could be good. The video would likely run twenty minutes but it might interest you to see that process.
That's the latest and the Vocalist LiveFX arrives tomorrow.
