As to being eligible for West Point, they told me, based on tests, it was an option for me in Basic Training.   I refused and that set me in eminently good stead with the Drill Sergeants.  Getting into West Point isn't such a Holy Grail, it's just another school ... to kill people, only it teaches you how to get other people do it.
