Video Multiplexers for Not Too Cheap

One of the first requirements for making video beyond the initial gee whiz of a single-camera shoot is the need for multiple cameras.  The next requirement becomes how to feed all these video cameras to the computer and forget about that iPad or iPhone since they have run home screaming for their mothers by now.  The next step is a video multiplexer which permits sourcing multiple video cameras to drive one or more outputs and, with a better unit, that will include audio.

The multiplexer solution is not expensive and can easily run up to ten grand for a single unit which does not include video cameras.  This one is a relatively-inexpensive example and keep in mind this is not a recommendation but rather a random sample.  CCTV Camera Pros:VM-16RT Video Mux, 16 Channel CCTV Multiplexer, Real-time Refresh, BNC

Note:  I have never done business with this company nor have I used this device.  It is specifically not a recommendation.

For my personal preference, I will use three video cameras at once and lament there isn't at least one more.  The ideal would be to feed them in real time to the computer and skip altogether the use of SD cards for transporting the data.  The increase in expense is substantial since it goes far beyond the cost of more cameras and those will cost about three grand a copy if they're any real good.

For real-time video, I need a real-time video producer / engineer so that takes me up into big, big bucks ... but ... now the result has the potential to be extraordinary and well beyond the Final Cut trickery we often see on YouTube and which I have often / sometimes used as well.

Don't dream down with simple handheld devices and the limited things they can do.  Dream big as it just might happen and I did at least partially achieve what I set out to do.  Multiple videos exploit three cameras and, to my taste, it enlivens them considerably as, also to my taste, there's nothing quite so boring as a single-camera view of just about anything.  Flying into a whale's mouth would be kind of cool but it's still a one-trick pony and the pony won't even survive.

There may yet be more video recording and one thing is sure as hell about that, it will definitely include multiple cameras and I will use anything which will generate a reasonably good image so long as it's HD.
