Mirabilia is a Charming Word

MILARABILIA is the Word of the Day and it's not a particularly useful word since it describes marvels or miracles and how many of those are you likely to see today.

It's charming to see the concept exists but it didn't enter English until the 19th Century from Latin so that may go some distance toward showing the novelty of the concept in relatively-modern culture, at least compared to Rome of the Caesars.

The word is subjectively positive or negative since possibly you welcome the idea of multiple miracles.  Conversely you may not like the idea means miracles are common and thus God must do them all the time.

(Ed:  go ahead with the cheapshot.  You know you want to.)

OK, so mirabilia implies God dispenses miracles like party favors.

Not all that cheap since the concept is valid in that context if not particularly so in the wording.

I'm not all that partial either way but I do think it's more than a little odd when it seems one Pope after the other drops a few miracles and there's a continuation on that which would likely be uselessly inflammatory.

Let's go with the idea, if miracles were all that common are they even miracles anymore.  Of course there's no answer at all to that one.  It's really not my purpose to light any fire on the matter, it's only an unusual concept which I know some find acceptable and some do not.

Nevertheless, it's charming some way that the concept exists at all, regardless of inclination to believe it.

Atheists are likely hard-ass about it and I cheerfully report I'm the same Happy Heathen my ol' Mother advised any authority who inquired.  That atheists are so hard-ass about it makes them ever so boring at parties because they're simply driven to tell you and to which we can only respond, "What's your trip, Missionary Man?"
