"Pan's Labyrinth" (movie)

"Pan's Labyrinth" is another recommendation from Cat and her score is still perfect as the movie is a delight.  It looks like the actual title from the Spanish is "The Labyrinth of the Faun" but I can't be sure of that.  The movie plays with English subtitles and it would be even more of a delight if I could understand the Spanish but the story is still beautifully clear.

There is cruelty in this movie that Disney wouldn't even show in a cartoon but there is beauty in it that a cartoon couldn't show.  The cruelty is precisely necessary for the portrayal of the story and none of it is so extreme as to make a caricature of the people in Franco's army.  This was in Spain during the middle of World War II and such was the nature of the time.

Magic also was the nature of the time but, as now, very few can see it.  Perhaps it's even more difficult to see it today than it was then or perhaps it's all just a dream.  That's for you to decide.
