NASA wants to manipulate the DNA of its astronauts headed to Mars to protect them from cancer-causing cosmic radiation.
NASA plans to send its first manned mission to Mars between 2030 and 2040 but still faces a number of obstacles before then.
The Mars-bound astronauts will be exposed to high-energy particles and NASA is looking at ways to repair the damage this would do to their DNA. This could include actually altering the astronauts’ genes and genetic activity.
When humans travel beyond the Earth’s magnetic field for prolonged periods, they are exposed to charged atomic nuclei that can rip through DNA and increase the risk of both cancer and dementia.

There's a clear need for the modification but take this beyond Mars since the same requirement will exist for any flight traveling past the Moon but likely for those too as well as those on the International Space Station since levels will be elevated for all of them.
Zen Yogi: you're seriously endorsing GMO humans while knowing this will effectively create a new species?
I endorse this most emphatically, mate, when the alternative is to commit them to dementia or death.

That's true, Yogi, but we don't have anything to do with astronauts now as all of them are super geniuses and they earned not one but two or three advanced degrees. They're first order brainiacs and they live in a different world ... plus others beyond this one.
