"The Cross" - Sign of the Times - Prince (video)

"The Cross" was the closing song for the Sign of the Times tour and it was one smashing way to do it.  Until recently I was not aware of the song so that makes me wonder why when it's a killin' tune.  Link to the video on GodTube.

Yah, a smashing tune so why doesn't it get the huge rep like, say "Purple Rain?"

Is the Christer association an impediment to it is really the question.  Unclear what other conclusion you could draw and that's a pitiful thing as I'm not a Christian and I took no offense in it.  Some of the overtly Christer songs are filled with such obsequious servitude they only make you want to reach for the bug spray but "The Cross" doesn't give that feeling.  The lyrics are below and are clearly Christian but I see nothing offensive in them.  No need to describe whatever may be offensive since these are not.

There's no Secret Underground Anti-Christ Conspiracy to undermine the church and the only thing really undermining it is money.  You may have heard that Moses spoke on that matter.

There's no conspiracy so the puzzlement over why not the smash hit out of it.  Sure there was the movie for "Purple Rain" but songs don't need a movie to go boffo on the charts.  Or maybe it did go big and I just missed it.  Unclear.

"The Cross" Lyrics

Black day, stormy night
No love, no hope in sight
Don't cry, he is coming
Don't die without knowing the cross
Ghettos to the left of us
Flowers to the right
There'll be bread for all of us
If we can just bear the cross

Sweet song of salvation
A pregnant mother sings
She lives in starvation
Her children need all that she brings

We all have our problems
Some big, some are small
Soon all of our problems
Will be taken by the cross

Black day, stormy night
No love, no hope in sight
Don't cry for he is coming
Don't die without knowing the cross

Ghettos to the left of us
Flowers to the right
There'll be bread for all, y'all
If we can just, just bear the cross, yeah

We all have our problems
Some are big, some are small
Soon all of our problems, y'all
Will be taken by the cross

The cross
The cross
