Option Y Brings the Mushrooms to Cat's MusikCircus

Option Y returned to Cat's MusikCircus this evening and the one thing you can be sure with the band as you won't have any idea what they will do.  They are highly-original and they take risks to get that way.

Plus they have mushrooms ... lots and lots of mushrooms.  If they can play like this when they're trippin' then that one is one major tip of the Rockhouse Rasta hat.

Perhaps there's the thought ... you're not from around here, are yewwww?

Note:  they are playing RL in the Providence, Rhode Island, area.  You can learn more about them at Option Y (Facebook) or hear them on ReverbNation.

This was kind of a poetic set in a beat prog rock kind of way.  It's the risk as they will take multiple genres and stick them together to discover the coolness in the result.  I haven't heard them do such a poetic set previously and they do a fascinating job of it which, amazingly enough, came to mushrooms ... lots and lots of mushrooms.

StubbyJack is running for President and he delivered a musical platform which, we suspect, would have some difficulty swaying the mainstream but freaks would be all over it.

We advised against #FeelTheStubby as a campaign hashtag on Twitter although #FeelTheJack may not do too well either.  He may not need a hashtag as the picture shows he can conjure flying turkeys just for you ... because he loves you.  Vote for Stubby ... or something like that.  This campaign may need a wee bit of wordsmithing.

This was the best kind of vibe with music in which people tell their friends, man, you have got to hear this band.  More and more people come as the show goes along and that's one grand thing to see.  It's not so much that many people come but rather it shows how the band clicks with everyone.

It was a gas hearing them as they give us tremendous diversity of expression in a continually-changing milieu.  The most striking thing is the absence of grandstanding.  The guitar work is precise and outstandingly-cool but it's only present when it needs to be.  Synth has to be killin' for prog rock or you're out of the game before the first few bars are over.  Underneath it all is a bass line which grabs you because it's got all the power it needs for presence but it's not overwhelming.  There is outstanding rhythm from the drums and that makes the band all the more intriguing.

Option Y gives an always-fascinating set and will almost certainly be most satisfying when your tastes go beyond mainstream.  If you really don't want the music to be too predictable then this is one fine band to hear.  It's engaging because you need to pay attention and listen to discover what are they saying, where are they going.

As always, a five star recommendation.  Cat says I have pink glasses for various things but never for reviews.  Giving you a false recommendation serves no-one at all and I checked with a friend earlier to whom I had raved-up the band before the show.  After he had seen a good chunk of the show, I asked if my estimation was accurate and, yep, it was.

This kind of performance which is highly-visual and involves multiple members of the band for the music is near the current best of what Second Life can do ... particularly when the band is Option Y and the venue is Cat's MusikCircus.

Stubby for President!
