"Red House" - Prince - Finest Version You Will Ever Hear (video)

Even as a lifetime fan of Jimi Hendrix going back to the sixties, the version of "Red House" Prince presents here goes to somewhere beyond where blues ever goes.

There's kind of a conventional blues in which it sounds like blues in the guitar tones (i.e. must always be a Les Paul, etc) and the conventional aspect can make for some rigid music.  It seems so open and free but it never really goes anywhere new and often sounds too similar to every other blues song you ever heard.

Then there's Prince and don't bail out too early because this smokes in different ways throughout.  His sax man has stunning skills and he has another singer who can rip some blues so we see brilliance attracting more brilliance.  Prince returns after those two for some guitar work which goes straight to the Purple House.

Genius.
