Auf Deutsch, this is schlager music and you can hear the true power of the song in the article with the video of the choir from the Netherlands.
It's not about individuals but about people and this interpretation has little value for that reason. It is only presented for contrast. Compare it to the orchestral version and this one is complete crap. (Blog: The Story of SS Exodus and the Exodus Song)

There was some misunderstanding earlier but the song applies to everyone. It was written for a specific reason but it grows to mean many things.
Even the American Indians came to America from somewhere else. It's the Nature of humans to wander and we don't really own any land but rather we live on it for a while. No-one knew that better than the American Indians.
There really are no refugees but rather people who have not found a home yet because we have all been refugees at one time or another.
Many of the people of PEGIDA, particularly in Dresden, were once refugees from East Germany and now they decry the influx of refugees to Germany, possibly louder than anyone. I have already heard a request to give Dresden back to Putin and the response, to my friend, was from someone who said she was ashamed every Monday to be in Dresden.
Another example comes from Britain in which a woman has started a massive drive to close the U.K. borders ... she lives in Spain so what business is it of hers anyway. She denies the benefit of living in England and this comes from someone who is living at the generosity of Spain? Fuck you, lady ... if you will excuse the abuse of the word, 'lady.' (RT: British woman behind 400k petition to ‘close UK borders’… lives in Spain)
As the Titanic sank, the bandleader said to the musicians, "Be British."
Apparently going to Spain makes one forget.
Note 1: I'm a passport-carrying U.K. citizen and that gives me no right to say what Britain should do with the borders but I can definitely call Bullshit! when some other emmigrant does it.
Note 2: I'm also a passport-carrying U.S. citizen because ... sometimes life gets that way.
