Maybe you're thinking my spelling isn't very good this morning but it's doing just fine and Untolerable is exactly the word I meant to use. You will need to keep reading to find out why!
Joaquin Gustav came back last night to Cat's Art MusikCircus and he was feeling it from a rainy afternoon in Buenos Aires.
At first Joaquin Gustav seemed a bit subdued in the same way as prolonged rain will get to anyone ... but then he started playing tango tunes. When he got to Tango Time it became like a Joaquin go-away-rain dance. We don't know if it sent the clouds away in Buenos Aires but it sure brought sunshine to Cat's Art MusikCircus.
Tango is where Joaquin really excels as the songs are intricate, beautiful, and full of all the promise of Latin nights.
Voodoo Shilton returned last night and it's been almost a month since the last time he played at the MusikCircus but for two of those weekends he was out of town for musical adventures. In the first one he went to play at the Second Life Mid-Atlantic Jam in (I think) Maryland. In the other he went out to L.A. to meet with a musical friend for a time of jams and pre-Earthquake coolness.
Voodoo Shilton brought some adventure with him last night as he has decided he needs more singing in his show. This is quite a good change as, no matter how technically challenging your music may be to play, it won't be exciting after people have heard it a few times. Just as the musician can memorize it, so can the audience. However, when you bring in your vocal, you bring a level of risk that will always be engaging to people. In part that's because public speaking is the number one terror for most people and public singing is just not even to be considered. Risk is exciting to people and I suspect it always will be as, deep inside, well ... we are still monkeys (laughs).
While Voodoo's singing was a bit tentative, he is pushing it much harder than he has previously and there is great coolness in that. There's always a fascination when you think you know a performer's show and then suddenly it starts growing into something else. I hope this isn't like his poetic readings in which he tried it one time and then decided he didn't need that in his act! He isn't chewing any clams (i.e. singing off-key notes) when he sings and and the expanded vocal is bringing a new dimension to his show.
(Ed: We've seen the report on the acts so what was the deal with the Untolerable stuff?)
I'm getting to that!
During the course of Voodoo Shilton's show, Untolerable Bohemian showed up. Cat has told me much about him and how he takes his show way out there but I had never heard him before. At first he wasn't going to play but then he and Cat talked some more and he decided to pick it up after Voodoo played. All the while Voodoo was playing, Untolerable was saying, man, I'd give up three of my fingers for just one of Voodoo's so I can play even a little bit like he does.
Why Untolerable Bohemian needs a guitar on his back in addition to the one he is playing is something you will have to ask him but, hey, he's a Bohemian and he's going to do things his way.
Untolerable actually lives in Portugal rather than Bohemia and he has a fascinating accent as if he stirred together French and Portuguese plus a bit of British. He also stirred in a bit of wine and he was obviously having a good time and was happy to be back.
When Untolerable starts singing, you can't mistake him for anyone else. He is making up a good bit of what he sings as he goes along and that makes much of his show unpredictable. He has an wonderful spirit and an excellent voice for improv and I was immediately hooked. It was obvious from the start why Cat has been so supportive of him.
Untolerable was performing in front of quite a few Second Life jammers as there were five in the audience who have played at the MusikCircus and there were other musicians who only play privately. That alone was great coolness as performers don't often go to the shows for other performers. To have five there was most unusual! For have all stay through the show is even more unusual!
Quite an evening at the MusikCircus and ... of course Cat and I danced!
Cat is very unassuming about all this and routinely minimises her part of it but she isn't thinking of what Lefty tells us: no-one brings all the magic to the MusikCircus but everyone brings their own and then it all mixes together. Cat most certainly brings magic!
