"War is for the Generals" was recorded yesterday in an end-to-end ad lib since the only words in my head were 'I have seen war, I have never seen peace' and 'war, what is it good for?' by Edwin Starr from forty-five years ago.
That it was all ad lib and recorded on a single camera meant the production was weak and the lyrics difficult to understand. The chords are, as ever, starting from A minor ... but ... I found I liked them and the scratchy scratchy with the pick over muted strings gave it a bit of a vibe so that gives a starting point to take another whack at it with better audio recording, etc, etc.
(Ed: it will never make a million, Elvis)
Correction, young heckler, it will never make a dime (larfs).
(Ed: why do it?)
It needs to be done, it needs to be said.
I have seen the war,
I've never seen the peace.
War is for the generals,
it's not for you and me.
I've seen the young girl burning,
the napalm on her back.
When will all this stop?
When can she go back?
Note: the little girl did live and, thanks to an inventive laser surgery technique, she does surprisingly well.
For now, that's enough. I know I will keep those and I'm really not sure what the other words were. As I say, it was all ad lib and sometimes the fish gets away. That leaves me free to try to catch it again.
Maybe, we shall see:
I've seen the monk afire,
he gives his life for us.
Peace is always truth
and war is always lies.
I think of Agent Orange
how little our lives mean
to those who live for shooting
for we who live for peace.
