The Robos Are Coming: Robo Salamander Edition

If there's any science you did not need, anything which includes a robot salamander would probably qualify but he's here nevertheless.

Roboticist Auke Ijspeert designs biorobots, machines modeled after real animals that are capable of handling complex terrain and would appear at home in the pages of a sci-fi novel. The process of creating these robots leads to better automata that can be used for fieldwork, service, and search and rescue. But these robots don't just mimic the natural world — they help us understand our own biology better, unlocking previously unknown secrets of the spinal cord.

As you see from the synopsis about the video, there's a serious purpose even when it's not immediately apparent.  Here at the Rockhouse, we think it would be cool just to have one.  Imagine sending one of these green-eyed love puppets out to greet the trick-or-treaters on Halloween Night, huh.  Enjoy those festive hi-jinx.

Ed:  do the green eyes glow?

Unknown but they would glow in my robo salamander.  He needs glowing LED eyes.  I would also add a few 5mw lasers to shoot out his nose.  They don't use much power so they wouldn't drain the power supply and I think they would add a swell touch.

Note:  in case you're not familiar with TED, they often have presentations from bona fide brainiacs and they're almost always interesting.
