All Power to the Nanobots - Science

Nanobots are the teeny tiny machines which may deliver cancer-fighting agents to tumors, re-program your brain to be passive and watch Fox News, etc, etc.  The problem all such 'bots face is how to get the juice to power them.  In the current example, we will go full Star Trek and beam that power to the nanobots in the gut and power them that way.  (Science Daily:  Wireless power can drive tiny electronic devices in the GI tract)

This is completely Star Trek since Dr McCoy would tell his patient to drink some of this since the fluid will contain the nanobots.  Once those li'l rascals are swimming about in your GI tract, he can wave that Doctor Medicine gadget around as he does but now we know that's how he powers the 'bots.  Aha.

Welcome to the future


Imagers, gastric pacemakers and other diagnostic and therapeutic tools could someday transform the way diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are measured and treated. But in order for these electronic devices to work, they need a power source. Traditional power sources, such as batteries, can be incompatible with the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract and have a limited lifespan within the body.

A more promising possibility is to power electronic devices from outside the body. In a new study published in Scientific Reports, investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory report that an ingestible electronic capsule, complete with a capsule-sized antenna capable of receiving a radio signal wirelessly, can safely power a device in the gastrointestinal tract in preclinical models. The new work makes wireless medical electronics for treating the gastrointestinal tract one step closer to reality.

"In further work, we would like to expand on these measurements by characterizing the effects of animal size, antenna depth, orientation and more on transmission efficiency, and focus on propagating fields -- or the way power travels -- to make transmission even more efficient," said Traverso.

The Rockhouse loves these researchers for real science.  They almost certainly know they're onto one of the biggest moneymakers since Cracker Jack but they just want to make it work.

That's the Jonas Salk attitude and the Rockhouse could not possibly admire it more.
