The One Thing Which Changes Slower than the Republican Party: Alligators

There hasn't been any significant change in the Republican Party since the 19th Century and that seems like a long time but even that level of slothfulness and indolence has been exceeded.  However, likely to no surprise, it took a reptile to do it, the American Alligator.

A remarkably young researcher took interest in the study of the American Alligator and discovered there's almost no difference between the modern alligator in the Everglades to the prehistoric alligator of about eight million years ago.  This isn't just a strong resemblance to the ancestral alligator but rather they're almost point-for-point identical.

The kid didn't even have his doctorate when he started his research but he's well on his way to that PhD now.  (Science Daily: Reptilian anachronism: American alligator older than we thought)

Take a look at that grotty old longhair of a scientist, huh?  He probably can't walk without a cane, right?

Note:  kid, I know you don't like being called a kid, what with being a man 'n all, but, face it, you're a kid.  You will know what I mean when you get as long of tooth as the alligator.  Most sincere best of luck to you and I admire your start.

Note:  posting a selfie doesn't mean anything as it only counts when someone else does it.  Posted in a scientific publication is definitely a full score.

For any measure of modern coolness we see on social networks, Evan Whiting shows few of the signs but he's got a damn alligator so top that with your One Direction collection, li'l darlin'.  He's young, he's happening, and he was lead author on two papers before he ever got out of undergraduate school.

We see a parade of old doddering fools passing themselves off as leaders on the news but this kid is the actual lead and he isn't looking for headlines, he's just looking for a future a little wiser than this one.  He doesn't just talk about it, he's doing it.

As to why it even matters whether alligators change, there's all kinds of concern about climate change and the temperature going up a few degrees.  During the time in which the American Alligator changed not one whit, the climate changed wildly.  The flexibility of life during times of great change is the biggest indicator of survival and yet the alligator hardly changed at all.

- Insert generic cheapshot about alligators and GOP adopting the same solution for survival:  grow a thick skin and ignore everything else -
