This will likely go down as one of the worst moves I ever made but it's done now. Greece is the closest to Paradise of anyplace I have ever been and I've been in some pretty cool places. Even though it sucks, it's still a revelation. Everything is a revelation as no matter where you are not everything is going to be good. There is a lot more on this in the book as it's not so simple that anyone can say Edinburgh sucks. It doesn't suck, it just where I am that sucks.
There's plenty of time to watch the news and all the buzz on Syria has been revealing as well. One thing that disturbs me is the frequent statement that there will be no 'boots on the ground' in Syria. This expression has completely depersonalised the troops who may be committed to any conflict. They aren't humans anymore, they're just boots. Fuck 'em.
There's really not much to say about Syria as the obvious stupidity of destabilising yet another Middle East regime is coming from the same idiots who originally armed al Qaeda by sending arms to bin Laden when he was fighting the Russians with the Mujahaddin in Afghanistan. It's known that the rebels in Syria are at least in part comprised of Muslim fundamentalists so, what do you know, they're going to assist another unit of al Qaeda.
The biggest long-term interest in this is what happens when you have multiple Middle East countries with a leadership vacuum after their strongman leaders have been deposed. It seems Washington has forgotten or never knew that Mohammed was as much a warrior as a prophet and he made his bones in the Middle East by uniting the warring tribes in Saudi Arabia. So, go ahead and keep screwing with the Middle East and enjoy the fruits of Islam 2.0. What could be more fun than that.
One thing that's always absent in these turkey shoots is that hardly anyone asks where the fighters got the weapons. Apparently Syria has chemical weapons but doesn't anyone have an interest in who sold them to Syria in the first place.
The madness continues.
