Looks Like a Fail on a Beg Button, Cadillac Man

There was a serious effort to put a Beg Button on Ithaka and by request but that didn't result in any sausages, I'm afraid.

PayPal was a bust since I didn't even find the original Donate button mechanism because they have made multiple changes to the site.  That aspect may still be there but I didn't locate it.

There was an attempt to use GoFundMe but that's buggered up with passwords and the easiest solution would be to use a different email address but the pseudo-security of the network is an endless annoyance which yields little benefit and I was already fed-up by that point.

Even better, Apple MAIL won't work without iCloud.  I deliberately chucked iCloud since I don't want that invasive piece of shit manhandling my software and copying it somewhere else.  I have no reason to trust them and why should I.

I am so damn glad I never let iCloud copy my music or pictures to the cloud since all of that would now be gone.  I know there's Apple's munged merengue of some sort which can finesse an exit from iCloud (sort of) but that's more irrelevant buggery which only exists to deter people from exiting.

There has rarely been an authority figure in my life worthy of trust.  This Colonel won't pop his cork for any hack in town and he damn sure will not be obedient for Milgram and push the button to hurt someone.  (WIKI:  Milgram Experiment)

Dismissing iCloud chucked almost all of my MAIL and none of it came back when I restarted iCloud to receive email today.  That was because GoFundMe was trying to send me an email about resetting my password but it couldn't get through.

Now you know I was getting pissed by that point.  How much carny chicanery does it fucking take to even use this piece of crap network anymore.

Sometimes I look at Google Mail but it's usually so littered with spam I bounce away from it as soon as I get there.  Apple MAIL isn't much better but at least it puts the spam in a Junk folder.  Even so, I have to validate it to discover whether it's really junk and what a fucking nuisance.

Yah, I'm aware it can be fixed since there's almost no tiny doubt I've worked harder and longer on computers than you.  The point is I'm sick to fucking death of fixing broken computers and one thing I learned categorically from my long experience is computers always break or will soon.  In prior times it was usually the hardware breaking the most often but now the software has become a disorganized collection of independent rat traps.

NASA figured it out decades ago with the pentaputer solution since they use computers in fives to give their best chance of a correct answer.  Even so, they sometimes shoot a rocket at Mars and miss ... but that was due to cockeyed software so the pentaputer had no chance of getting it right.

They have made the systems wickedly complex, my brothers and sisters, but the only real thing to come from the complexity has been wickedness.

As with all things, the Rockhouse mantra applies since the more complex the system, the easier to wreck it.  A bank seems impenetrable, right?

- segment deleted by choice rather than intervention -

One of my favorite examples of a side door was a BBS operator a long, long time ago who ripped me off.  There was no recourse at that time since all of it was illegal.  However, I had a utility which would format a disc in seven seconds so the choice was to embed that within a module which appeared to be the then-raging game of Star Trek.

Since there was a problem with the BBS operator and he would no longer let me in, the answer was not to hack the system but go into it posing as a girl.  Presto, the system is yours, honey, and you say you have a copy of Star Trek?  She did and the BBS operator immediately used it.

You can hear a short series of clicks when the seven-second formatter takes off but there's no chance of reacting in time to turn off the drive.  He might have been down for a week after that.

Like I'm tellin' you, mates, the side door is almost always open and the more loosely-connected rat traps they make, the more side doors spring into existence.

You Say You Love Dogs ... But for How Far Back #Science

Researchers have found the oldest evidence for dog breeding on a remote island in the East Siberian Sea. Nine thousand years ago, the hunter-gatherers of Zhokhov Island lived in animal-skin tents, hunted large numbers of polar bears with nothing more than a spear, and appear to have been the first people on Earth who bred dogs for a specific purpose—in this case to pull sleds, so that they could track reindeer across hundreds of miles of frozen plains. The work could rewrite the thinking about some of the earliest days of dog domestication, and it suggests that scientists interested in the beginnings of the human-canine relationship should be paying more attention to early Arctic peoples.

- Science:  Siberia yields earliest evidence for dog breeding

The interested student is advised the above is only the summary and you're invited to review the fullness of it in the source article.

Note:  of all the science references Ithaka uses, Science is the most scientifically technical in terms of adherence to academic structure of presentation, etc.  You won't find the easiest reading but it often goes the deepest.

Maybe you want to get provincial and think, man, there were Americans around at that time so maybe they did it first and maybe they did since the first ones weren't so far removed from the ones in eastern Siberia ... in fact, they had been the ones in eastern Siberia.

Note:  the regards as Americans everyone back to the first who set foot on the continent since all of us are immigrants or born to immigrants.

Those millennials love to take things to next levels so here's one.  When sled dogs permitted those people to travel hundreds of miles, which people do you suppose were the ones who actually did emigrate to America.

Watson:  you might want to sync this with the actual closing of the Bering Straight for the land bridge.

We don't need to sync that, Watson, since humans already did.

Riddle me this, said the Pie Man,
as he walked with his dogs,
"What if they already knew
much earlier than science has found
since maybe they don't know it yet
when that's deeper in the ground"

- the Colonel

Watson:  maybe they used reindeer as pack animals and came across that way.

Well, I tell you what, Reindeer Man ... if you have a reindeer to carry your stuff or you have some dogs, which do you think will be your best choice for going over questionable ice.

Tip:  there are no reindeer in Alaska.

Here's the Rockhouse Hare-Brained Theory since it seems logical the first ones to try to cross the Straight successfully were probably using dogs while those who were using reindeer came in later waves.  Maybe the reindeer were a prehistoric version of "Wagon Train" which never made a trail but which was happy to follow one.

"Looking Beyond the Magic Land" #Poetry

Is it a planet without love
when half the children starve
or perhaps the Ones don't know
and think when they have enough
surely there's plenty for everyone
to live just as we do
but they never seem to look beyond
to see how it goes for you

Africa and Asia
are where it gets the worst
where they don't need any ritual
and they can't afford a hearse
They asked where is Jesus
but were told he isn't here
He only feeds white people
so they keep him over there

We can't promise pretty flowers
since those kids will never see them
and they don't want to hear
what happened in Bethlehem
They know no-one is coming
and there's no evidence someone cares
when so many children are dying
and any help is scarce

Feeding all the people
is not such a difficult thing
but that's not what civilizations do
when it's violence they bring
One day we can stop that
There's got to be a way
but sadly for those children
it will not be today

Courage without Purpose is Only Foolhardiness | Take a Dive, Justin Casquejo

No, he didn't fall but come back next time and hopefully he will so emergency workers don't have to risk their lives to catch his chicken ass.

New Jersey teenager Justin Casquejo was arrested Thursday for illegally entering and climbing a Manhattan apartment tower. In 2014, Casquejo made news when he climbed the yet-to-be-completed One World Trade Center.

Casquejo, 19, is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday on charges of criminal trespassing and reckless endangerment, according to reports. He was arrested around 9pm ET on Thursday after he and a friend climbed the 52-story Paramount Tower apartment building on Second Avenue.

Police said Casquejo hung off the building's edge, DNAInfo reported. He was arrested after climbing down, police added.

In this case, no emergency workers were at risk and we couldn't care less what became of the Selfie King but he did give us platitudes.

Everyday, I consider stopping my posts on Instagram because I'm afraid of how it looks to the people in charge of my court case. I'm terrified of getting in trouble and going to jail and most of all not being able to do the work that I'm most passionate about. But I can't let that fear take over. I have a responsibility to reach more people and inspire the ones that I do. Because if I quit, I can't change my life for the better. If I quit, I can't change the world for the better. This kid isn't working with anyone as you can easily see and the Rockhouse thus dismisses him as a fake and a charlatan.

Courage without purpose is only foolhardiness and only yields selfies but it will never, ever, yield any change for the better, any more than the Kardashians ever did.

Climate Change for Nikki Haley, Trump's Circus Barker #Science

The Rockhouse doesn't like it when microcephalic bimbos such as Nikki Haley try to toy with us when she said, "Donald Trump believes in climate change and that humans have something to do with it."

Tell you what, party girl, we don't give a fuck what he believes since Trump is just another pseudo-scientific bimbo as well.  As with much of the rest he does, he's not too good at it.

Here's the real science and don't you worry about reading it, Nikki Haley, since it will fly right over your idiot head.  Tip:  consider being a real woman such as Susan Sarandon who stands up for principle rather than uninformed dogma.  (Ithaka: We Hear a Lot about Strong Women and Susan Sarandon is Steel)

Methane takes the quick way out

Accounting for all the sources and sinks of methane is important for determining its concentration in the atmosphere. Andreassen et al. found evidence of large craters embedded within methane-leaking subglacial sediments in the Barents Sea, Norway. They propose that the thinning of the ice sheet at the end of recent glacial cycles decreased the pressure on pockets of hydrates buried in the seafloor, resulting in explosive blow-outs. This created the giant craters and released large quantities of methane into the water above.

Abstract

Widespread methane release from thawing Arctic gas hydrates is a major concern, yet the processes, sources, and fluxes involved remain unconstrained. We present geophysical data documenting a cluster of kilometer-wide craters and mounds from the Barents Sea floor associated with large-scale methane expulsion. Combined with ice sheet/gas hydrate modeling, our results indicate that during glaciation, natural gas migrated from underlying hydrocarbon reservoirs and was sequestered extensively as subglacial gas hydrates. Upon ice sheet retreat, methane from this hydrate reservoir concentrated in massive mounds before being abruptly released to form craters. We propose that these processes were likely widespread across past glaciated petroleum provinces and that they also provide an analog for the potential future destabilization of subglacial gas hydrate reservoirs beneath contemporary ice sheets.

Science:   Massive blow-out craters formed by hydrate-controlled methane expulsion from the Arctic seafloor

The last time there was a large-scale release of methane into the atmosphere, the Snowball Earth resulted and the planet froze from pole to pole.  While it seems counterintuitive that the Earth would freeze as a result of climatic change, the thaw at that time is the way the methane got released and the consequence of all that greenhouse gas was the Earth froze.  (WIKI:  Snowball Earth)

You see from Nikki Haley what politics does to this since maybe you're aware of humans on the planet at that time but no-one else is.  There were none.  Volcanic activity likely triggered the release of the methane and the consequence of that was one of the most colossal climatic flips in the planet's history.

The question of climate change is not one of whether anyone in Washington believes since it doesn't require anything from them to proceed although we have seen they're more than happy to make it worse with the output from coal-fired energy systems.

When the Earth can freeze from pole to pole without Man's activity, you've just got love what will come from that kind of power in combination with the additional damage factories, etc have done and the glory of that disaster is yet to come.

Pa, Pa, There's a 'nader Coming

The picture wasn't shot in Texas ... this is Russia.

Here is obvious proof DARPA is using their secret weather weapon again since Russia rarely suffers tornadoes but there were many in a single day.  (RT:  ‘Straight out of American movies’: Huge tornado terrifies locals in southern Russia (PHOTOS, VIDEOS))

It was more than from the American movies, comrades, since these ones were sent especially for you by your friends at DARPA.  Don't worry about them hating you; DARPA hates everybody.  Perhaps you have heard of Cthulhu and welcome to DARPA.

A spate of tornados spanning several regions caught residents in southern Russia by surprise. The natural phenomenon, which is unusual for the area, left people in fear and awe.

- RT

A terror attack may be scary although nothing ever happened to me from one except dorking up the flight schedules on 9/11 so I got stuck in Atlanta.

However, if you want to absolutely scare the bejeebers out of people then send a 'nader at them and except for a few idiots who shoot some video and consequently transition to deceased, all the others are going to run like li'l bunnies although hiding in a bathtub is a good option when nothing else is available.

The 'naders aren't quite as scary in the daytime as they are at night since then the storm makes the night even darker.  There was one time driving home from work in Cincinnati which probably took about half an hour.  Halfway into that there was the alarm for tornadoes touching down in and around Cincinnati so what's the driver to do.  They're all around but you can't see them and it's blacker than in any of the soon-to-be out-of-business coal mines.

Naturally, I opted for the most senseless path since I decided it was equidistant to head back to work or continue home so I decided there didn't appear to be a 'nader in the vicinity so roll on home.  That was categorically stupid since any 'nader which gets near you in a car will turn you into spam in a can and you probably will not survive.

The proper reaction was to head into any of those hotels around Sharonville to seek shelter until the warning was lifted.

The Bunny in the Buttercups

A rabbit among buttercups, near Bolton, Lancashire.

That is not my bunny but a bunny and she seems well-pleased to live with the buttercups.  My bunny, Henrietta, is so large she would likely terrify this bunny if, well, this li'l bunny could see her.

That crazy giant bunny
keeps sitting on my chest
and she has no need for lovin'
that's just where she likes it best
She said she keeps on doing it
as coughing gives her dread
so instead her fur gets in my face
and I start sneezing hard instead

The Poppies Look Lovely in the Morning

These poppies do sometimes represent death but not from opium since Papaver somniferum is the Opium Poppy but this one is the Common Poppy, sometimes known as the Flanders Poppy.  (WIKI:  Papaver rhoeas, Papaver somniferum)

While the Opium Poppy can bring death with opium and its products, the Flanders Poppy remembers those who have died in battle.

"In Flanders Fields"

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae (The Great War 1914-1918)

There's a Bit of Introspection and Ain't We Got Fun ... Yes

Sometimes introspection comes and I write about what I know.  The thing I know now is some introspection so, dayum, this is your lucky day.

The idea Practical Intelligence vs Creative Intelligence is fascinating to me since it explains a great many things in terms of the pragmatism we can bring different aspects of reality.

Cadillac Man mentioned yesterday there was patriotism in me in honoring the flag and surrendering to the draft.  However, that isn't what happened since I saw it as Fate and drawing a 19 in the lottery sealed it.  Understanding that, for me, none of it was real may be impossible for well, anyone, but it's almost guaranteed for the PI.

Inquiring Mind:  you seriously believe you did not know what you were doing?

I knew, alright, but I didn't believe it was real.  When I did decide it was real, the Grand Canyon opened between me and the rest of the world.  This isn't about loneliness but rather the immensities of perception.  There's also no interest in slagging myself since my presence did mean some other Dagwood didn't have to do it.  That aspect took decades to grasp.

The epiphanic aspect is the PI approach to things seems to be chosen but I did not feel as if I had chosen anything in becoming a CI, it's just the thing I do.  This has nothing to do with something is from the left brain or the right brain since we see only irrelevance when it doesn't matter if we carry it about in a teacup and we choose which tea is in it at any given time.

There seems to be a dominant aspect since PIs tend to continue thinking as PIs and I'm not convinced CIs continue based on a conscious decision beyond it feels the right thing to do.  In that respect, I suspect the PI derives consistent positive fulfillment for continuing with that thinking whereas the CI probably does not.

For example, I can fix a toilet, mostly, and it will probably work.  I broke a headset a couple of months ago but I 'fixed' it with a pipe cleaner so, wtf, it works and the job is done.  It's still working and there simply isn't any interest in thinking in that way except in terms of task fulfillment.

PIs can fix things with great ease and they can often fix just about anything.  They can be brilliant or dumb asses just as with anyone else and it's the same with CIs since some write symphonies while Lather thrashes the air with his hands.

There is an epiphany since there wasn't much physical damage from the military but the Grand Canyon was in my mind and I've wandered around in there much of my life.  It's only in quite recent years I saw there wasn't a reason to do that so there are definitely joy joy feelings, not so much because I figured it out but rather because I don't have to do it anymore.  I can't say I've ever had much use for hiking anyway but skiing was fine even when I wasn't even the shade of one of the juniors who could fly through the air with the greatest of ease with their skis.

I did get everyone in the family skiing behind that.  My ol' Dad had tried and failed years before but this time they saw me doing it and thought, wtf, I can do that.  It's more than likely some of them are still doing it.  (takes a humble bow ... larfs ... falls over)

I'm not going to do any nostalgia for skiing since you will have to discover that for yourself.  I can provide some incentive, however.  For whatever scents you may detect just now ... that ain't in the mountains.  For whatever smog there maybe in your town, it ain't there.  For any of the bugs which may be bothering you, they ain't there either.  There are, however, the most supremely-proportion posterior natures for the ski bunnies ... but ... you slide past them since they only hang around in the lodge.  Head out to do some slidin' and you will find also some deliciously-proportioned posterior reflections as well and you're following down the slope so what else will you watch, cabron.

After the lifts shut down, you're going to head for the spaghetti, aren't you ... and you're going to eat all you can stuff into yourself since you need that boost for the next day.  What you do after that is on you since there are three things to do in a ski resort:  ski, party, and have sex.  Tallyho, mates.

Oh, and bag the damn cocaine since that's not a Rocky Mountain High.  That's a fake buzz which will steal the real one.  That's not sexy; thats not sexy, at all.

How to Love a Gigantic Iceberg, At Least for the Moment #Science

Probably you have heard of the biggest iceberg ever recorded and oh, gee, is it going to break off.

Moving along from that ... yes, it's going to break off, maybe within a week.  There is a however and that comes below.

This is the ice flow velocities of Larsen C in April/May 2017, from ESA Sentinel-1 data.

Credit: A. Luckman, MIDAS, Swansea University, with Copernicus Sentinel data

Science Daily:  Antarctic ice rift close to calving, after growing 17km in 6 days, latest data from ice shelf shows

That's definitely one gigantic boomer bastard of an iceberg but the interested student is invited immediately to focus on the inset which shows how much of Antarctica it includes.  When you melt all of it, as is predicted you will, that results in the 230' rise in sea levels and good-bye Florida.  The however is this iceberg is not going to do that ... but ... as always nothing is that simple.

From the article you will readily discern the evidence in support of climate change and the Rockhouse has no need or desire to refute any of it.

The nothing is that simple part is the extent to which the melting iceberg delivers high volumes of fresh water to the highly-salinated sea insofar as that affects fish populations, weather patterns, etc.  The Rockhouse does not have a citation for that aspect and you won't find immediate doom and gloom in that either.

The interested student is invited to pursue the original link and it will certainly make clear preparation needs to be made but there is no threat of do this or you will die tomorrow.

The really interested student is invited to review science regarding large deposits of methane from natural gas and frozen in place by the ice.  Release of that methane has truly devastating climatic consequences since, the last time it happened, Earth froze from pole to pole in the Pleistocene Extinction.

The Socratic advisory has been to know yourself but the extension of it is know your world and, thus, the invitations to pursue further.

Ithaka Has Some Heady Readers Today

It's impressive when you head for the Atomic Bomb article and maybe you kick right back out of it since this isn't the basic survey course but still there was interest to look.  There's a perennial crew of boob monkeys coming through which I find kind of amusing since, sure, there are boobs here and there but nothing even close to lad's mag material.  Son, if'n you're coming here for porno then, I'm tellin' you, your pizza done lost its pepperonis.

That article spews some hard-core American history and every word of it is documented.  All of is contrary to that which is called history now but some of you saw that for yourself in the article or your own reading of the history.  Much of that which they're pitching now simply isn't true.  (Ithaka:  Atomic Bomb, Japan, and Racial Guilt #History)

It's impressive that y'all even show interest in such a subject but I wouldn't be gettin' too puffed up just yet since the invisible woman in London is pulling more reads and I suppose she must be naked but prurience factor is like a date with Theresa May or anyone in Connecticut (cough).

Ithaka:  See the Invisible Woman in London

The Anthropologist inevitably asks, are those the same people.  Does this mean people who get off on understanding the early evolution of nuclear weaponry in America also have interest in invisible women, probably naked, in London.  Inquiring minds need to know.

Inquiring Mind:  no, we don't.

Fair enough, mate.

However, we observe this must mean they're mostly PIs rather than CIs.

Inquiring Mind:  what about the porno monkeys?

We don't know about them except they don't seem to be able to get laid.

In an RL example, we have one who has always had an implicit understanding of his standing with things whereas in my own case, I never did.  That seems clear evidence of the PI (i.e. Practical Intelligence) approach to things but the same fellow had previously announced, in total seriousness, "I want to cure death."

No doubt that's CIspeak (i.e. Creative Intelligence).

The PI won because that aspect knew he just wanted to get out of that house and he was out not too much later.  Porno was probably of not much interest since he was married a few years after that.

Now the slam bang, screwin' like bonobo apes only lasts a couple of years in a marriage but Chinese have a marvelous story about that.

Confucius or somebody or other said, "Tie a knot in a string for each time you make love in a night and then untie a knot each time you make love the next night.  Continue this through your marriage and eventually that string will have a lotta fuckin' knots."

Inquiring Mind:  Confucius said that?

Oh sure

The PI understands such things and the RL example is married to the same woman, oh, at least three decades later.
