Sure You Love Your Truck But Do You Love it This Much

Photo: Ford

It is time. We knew the luxo-truck onslaught that’s been wreaking havoc across this great nation was going to bring us to this moment. But now, it’s finally here: Ford has thrown down the gauntlet with its new “Super Duty Limited” line, whose crown jewel is an F-450 that can cost over $100,000.

Truck Yeah:  The $100,000 Luxury Ford F-450 Truck: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Previously, there was an F-150 special edition which featured the Dallas Cowboys.  Little was done to boost the power of the motor, the quality of the suspension, etc but it was painted up with special regalia to show its real Cowboys identity.  The regular F-150 was, maybe, twenty to thirty grand and the special edition was, maybe, forty to fifty grand.

The Cowboys F-150 seemed like a large packet of money but some people liked them and you will see them proudly tooling around the DFW area.  When that cost is thought here is already considered exorbitant, the new one is stratospheric.

Zen Yogi:  it's not just an F-150 this time since they've moved up to the F-450, the most heavily decked-out pickup truck Ford has in their line

My purpose isn't to pitch it to you to then say, hey, what a great deal ... but still you may find the features interesting.

Among the features these premium Limited models offer, are: two-tone heated and vented front leather seats, heated rear seats, premium leather-wrapped steering wheel, suede headliner, hand-finished ash wood trim, a unique grille and tailgate, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, adaptive steering, lane-keep alert, forward collision warning, LED headlamps, panoramic moonroof.

- TV

Zen Yogi:  those are some remarkable luxuries to find in a pickup truck

The F-450 is also their most ferocious since it's got the beefiest motor, heaviest suspension, etc.  As these vehicles go, this one is a beast.

Zen Yogi:  what is it worth then?

I tell you what, my furry buddy, I don't care about it's real worth or selling price which may not be the same thing.  I'm interested in showing you the vehicle because the price immediately struck me but there's more to it since this F-450 is packed with more automotive goodness than most of the F-x50 trucks I see on the road ... and in Fort Worth I see a lot of them.

Although the truck doesn't suit my purposes, it's a monster within its class and it carries big coolness from that.  They don't get recognized too much since people often dismiss pickups as not suitable for the refined members of society but they're still cool for what they are and what they do.

Hopefully you got a kick out of it even when you may not favor pickup trucks.

The Liberal Redneck / Trae Crowder Returns to Talk and #TakeTheKnee

Even when you don't feel so supportive of #TakeTheKnee, you still might get a laugh out of the video since he's funny and The Liberal Redneck has been a favorite Rockhouse comedian for years.  It's not so much that he's a redneck comedian since there are many but I never heard one talk like this before.

I don't agree with him on all things but I don't want to turn the vibe heavily political since his words are smart and fast to make for a great set and really the thing he's saying is can't we all just get along.

Whether The Liberal Redneck or Trae Crowder, the Rockhouse loves him and he tours all over these days.  In fact, I don't think he's stopped touring for some years now.  He's one happenin' fellow.

Holy Mackerel, My Brothers and Sisters, This is the Cat's Meow

You have just pushed Ithaka over 999K so there's no countdown after this one on the way to Win a Million.  It will almost certainly happen before this time tomorrow and that will do it for any further blather from me about winning the brass ring on the carousel.

Zen Yogi:  now people will know what to do tomorrow since they can plan their days around the celebration

It's a helpful public service I offer, Yogi.  I'm not aware of an actual celebration, tho.  Maybe the sheer ecstasy of the moment will lift people everywhere to break into spontaneous and rapturous dance.

Zen Yogi:  I'm glad you had two such goals, Silas

Why is that, Yogi?

Zen Yogi:  so the other one had a chance of coming true

Zen Yogi:  you really are jazzed about it, aren't you?

Sure I am, mate, and especially now.  I've written previously about it in being five years in coming.

Zen Yogi:  what comes after?

One thing I can tell you doesn't come after is any more of the heave ho, mates, let's take her rest of the way home.  That's about as much promo as I can really stand actively doing anyway but it was gloriously shameless while it lasted.

Now I can complete the turnover of Ithaka to Seraphin with a little extra zing since it's coming with a million miles of scarcely imaginable vision from all the thoughts of those who read it.

Zen Yogi:  you pile Seraphin with ugly lead weights in responsibility!

Life piles responsibility, mate, and it's our trick is to make interesting.

Zen Yogi:  you're heading for Deep Thoughts again, Silas

How about this, my furry buddy, as I'm tickled that it seems I did make it interesting.

Zen Yogi:  there still needs to be some kind of ceremony and we already know you don't like marching bands

A band might be too much ...

Zen Yogi:  too much of a muchness?

Of course.

This is more than just splish splash for Seraphin since the view which counts is the respect for the readers.  Mine has (cough) not always been what it might have been but it has risen out-a-sight from the beginnings and Ithaka does progressively better the more it focuses on the Big Dreams which are possible through the latest technology or via whatever path.

Opposition may come from someone such as a current hip hop singer who is determined to prove the Earth is flat.  Engaging in farcical exchanges of that nature won't elevate your vibe by showing his head is full of Bubble Yum gum.  Note:  it's true about that singer and the beauty part is he wants to launch some satellites to prove it.

The focus on the readers is vital to show respect and my appreciation of that has grown steadily.  This one really must come down as a firm advisory from the chalkboard of Mister Chips, Seraphin.

At the bottom of this is thanks to the readers for showing the response you have since it entirely fulfills that which is otherwise cliche in saying I could not have done it without you.  Absent an audience, I'm some old crank in a park who gives speeches to pigeons and even they won't stay unless I feed them.

Many thanks to all of you.

Amazon Echo: Which Alexa Smart Speaker is Right for You?

Photographer:  Amazon

Amazon pioneered the concept of a smart speaker, an audio device with a voice-activated digital assistant that can do everything from play music (from Amazon Music or Spotify, Pandora, and certain other services if you’re a subscriber), to recite the day’s news, deliver weather and traffic updates, and—perhaps most importantly—control virtually every element of your smart home.

More recently, Amazon made it possible to make outgoing calls from an Echo to any phone number in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. All you need to do is ask Alexa to call the name of your contact. You can also use Echos as an in-home intercom and make video calls (provided the person on the other end of the line has the Alexa app on their phone or a video-enabled Echo in their house).

TechHive:  Amazon Echo: Which Alexa smart speaker is right for you?

The interesting thing to the Rockhouse about these Alexa houses is we don't find them interesting at all yet they seem to enjoy great popularity.  Therefore, the Rockhouse gets curious since maybe this means there's something we're missing and we have not really seen the reason yet.

At the center of the system, it's an odd-looking device with a speaker.  That doesn't seem like much of a way to present music relative to the way most of this busload of freaks has done it anywhere through life, tho.  The preference of freaks has usually been for the level of equipment needed for aficionados, otherwise known as music snobs, and a single speaker wouldn't be acceptable even now.

The Rockhouse purpose isn't to slash the device since there's ongoing interest in finding the goodness in one to explain its popularity.

Zen Yogi:  the audio aspect doesn't sound so compelling and the author of the article wasn't so enamored of it yet has great enthusiasm for it so what else does it do?

The biggest general pitch is it performs as the hub for control and management of intelligent home devices, all of which are controlled by voice command.

At the most elemental level of that we may ask Alexa to turn on a light.  Doing that doesn't require such high intelligence but maybe we can ask her to turn on the lights in the living room to do all of them and that would be more impressive.

Something more elaborate is when your smart monitoring camera over your front door alerts you with voice via Alexa of the person's presence.  If the camera has face recognition capability then it can even tell you via Alexa of the visitor's name.  Face recognition inspires a great deal of agita just now but we will leave any controversy out of it for the review.

If Alexa were to ask me from that if I want to open the door for this person then I'll be impressed and more so if some type of companion intelligent device could perform the physical opening of the door.

Here's a technological sidenote:  the best of the modern monitoring cameras for this type of home surveillance is presented in another article.  See  TechHive: Best home security camera: Keep an eye on the home front

For better understanding of the value to any interface to intelligent home devices, we need a good view of the things they do.  One example from TechHive is about a vacuuming robo.  (TechHive:  Neato Robotics adds more smarts to its vacuum cleaners)

If I can tell the Neato robo to vacuum the living room then that's a useful function and we will set aside any tactical matters about its independent ability to deliver itself from some other location in your pad.  This intelligent robo serves a straight-up utility purpose and, even better, it's something I don't want to do.

Zen Yogi:  it's still not exactly tickling your tummy, tho, is it?

I'm not sure I want anything tickling my tummy, Yogi, but, no, it doesn't.

There's intelligence in modern home windows since the glass can darken or lighten itself based usually on electrical stimulation.  An interface to an intelligent hub would mean possibly I could say, "Alexa, back off with the darkening in the parlor just now ... for whatever reason."  That capability would be good and even better if I can tell it, "Alexa, keep it that way for two hours or until two o'clock etc."

Mates, I'm running into the same thing I've encountered previously in checking out Alexa.  The smart devices don't seem so wildly intelligent.

Powering up my devices for the Rockhouse music studio is an intelligent operation since it's vital they're powered up in a precise sequence or some of them can easily be damaged by it.  At this time it's not likely realistic to ask of my assistant, "Alexa, power up the studio."

Zen Yogi:  so you don't believe it will happen then?

That's not true, Yogi, since I do believe it will happen and the question remains of when.

Cadillac Man, One More Chance to Call Before Pilgrimage

Last night was my hope for making a call to you, Cadillac Man, and I'll definitely be trying today to pull it off.  I don't know if anything has changed and this will be the last chance to talk rather than text about anything like that before flight time.

There's some business which must be handled tomorrow and we have been trying for a week but one or other of us would choke and it would have to be deferred to the next day.  Since it's an ambitious effort walking to the toilet, there's a challenge in managing this one but it's necessary since it's the only way to get my signature notarized.  We shall see.

So timing is unclear but I will be trying to call at some time throughout.

I get kind of a kick out of talking about the morphine since otherwise it's anathema to just about everyone.  The thing I find amusing regarding any kind of kozmik opiate buzz from the morphine is that it doesn't give one and I don't like the befuddling aspect of it which I don't at all call a buzz or a high.

Zen Yogi:  do you make a study of this stuff?

Why not when it's necessary as part of my situation so maybe that can give some insight into the reason people abuse it.

Zen Yogi:  do you find that?

Nope.  For me it's just befuddling and I'm pleased if I don't vomit from it.

Zen Yogi:  that's just like getting drunk!

I bet you want a rim shot for that from the Maestro, huh?

Where I find the morphine delivers is on its specific purpose for pain relief.  It takes about an hour for the pill to take effect after the drug has completely worn off previously.  That goes straight from a situation which is intolerable to one in which, oh yeah, I can hack it.  I've deliberately let it wear off a few times like that to verify for myself whether I really need it.  That's settled and the situation is immediate now because I'm almost out of it and you won't want to see that situation.  Note:  running out will NOT happen and hospice already knows of it.

We're pulling up close on some major jams with this Pilgrimage and the glowing light it brings.  Yahoo.

DFW is the mondo gigantico airport but Yevette is much more familiar with your choice of Love Field.   She has stories of her own but also has one about a friend of hers who flew The Beatles around from there on parts of their US tours.  There are not so many stories in DFW but Love Field abounds with them.  It would be cool getting her started on those stories.

Flight time tomorrow.  Wow.  Ain't that a kick.

The Remarkable International Cooperation Toward Building the Deep Space Gateway

The Deep Space Gateway sounds right away like it came from a sci fi novel due to the coolness of it.

The actual purpose of the Gateway is as a Moon base and Russia and America will work together to build it.  Other nations are expected to join the project as well and it will function in much the way the International Space Stations is working now.  The number of nations which have worked to support the latter has been a thing of international beauty, particularly when its purposes are non-military.  They have laudable goals and they're big ones.

There have been rumors that the US and Russia would be teaming up to build a lunar base. Sources within the country told Popular Mechanics that the head of their space organization, Roscosmos, was set to announce a partnership agreement with NASA this week. Now, Roscosmos and NASA have both released statements saying stating the two countries' shared "common vision for human exploration."

They go on to say that Russia and the US will cooperate on a Moon program, specifically mentioning the Deep Space Gateway by name. That's the base NASA plans to build in lunar orbit starting in the 2020s (the statement sets a mid-2020s goal for beginning the project). The release also mentions that other international partners are considering signing onto the lunar base.

Engadget:  Russia and the US will work together to build a moon base

Cooperation in this way is the Glory Road for the Rockhouse since it accomplishes things which have international agreement and the scope for anything of that nature is inevitably large just as it has been with the ISS.

Ref:  "Glory Road" by Robert A. Heinlein.

The Deep Space Gateway may look something like this which is apparently an early vision from Lockheed Martin.

Photographer:  unknown

The approach to the Deep Space Gateway is significantly improved over even the International Space Station.

Right now, the ISS has different ports for the multiple vehicles that dock with it. The Russian Soyuz capsule uses a different style docking port than the Space Shuttle did -- the Americans had to install adapters to convert Shuttle docking ports and allow private craft like SpaceX's Dragon to connect with them. Collaboration from the ground up, rather than making our own plans and partnering with the Russians at the last minute (like we did with the International Space Station), means that we can establish, collaborate on and coordinate technical specifications, making things easier in the medium and long term.

- Engadget

This type of commited, long-term cooperation is of inordinate beauty to the Rockhouse since it brings combined projects in support of interplanetary trading and all in the cause of peace.  Of course we love it.

We know the speculation about the Deep Space Gateway is not idle sci fi pish posh since the same teams have built a project just like this one already.

Carry the project out one more step since you're likely aware multiple commercial space corporations and countries, mostly American, to get to the Moon.  The Rockhouse is glad to see it but all of them have appeared to be independent efforts rather than cooperative ventures between multiple corporations.

How about if the Deep Space Gateway could be the home to some lunar transport shuttles down to the various lunar bases on the ground.  In that way, the new commercial big dealers could fly their much bigger space vessels to the DSG and then avail themselves of the lunar shuttles to get to the surface.  The lunar landing is a tremendous expense but that would be reduced tremendously by the DSG shuttle landers.

Note:  there is extensive discussion in the source article regarding the different docking ports on the DSG and, thus, it gains the ability to host space vessels from many sources.

Heinlein's "Glory Road" is not the same story or even similar except insofar as walking the Glory Road is an excellent way to make exceptional things happen.

Zen Yogi:  now they will be flying the Glory Road, Silas

Which makes it all the more magnificent, mate.

Navy Returns to Compasses and Pencils to Help Avoid Collisions at Sea | Report from Pink

The idea of the modern Navy using pencils for anything may seem absurd but the thinking is for resolution of various Navy ship crashes which have taken place in recent months.  The expectation for the use of pencils is real but it's part of an overall drive to go back to basics to prevent additional crashes.

WASHINGTON — Urgent new orders went out earlier this month for United States Navy warships that have been plagued by deadly mishaps this year.

More sleep and no more 100-hour workweeks for sailors. Ships steaming in crowded waters like those near Singapore and Tokyo will now broadcast their positions as do other vessels. And ships whose crews lack basic seamanship certification will probably stay in port until the problems are fixed.

New York Times:  Navy Returns to Compasses and Pencils to Help Avoid Collisions at Sea

Likely you see at least one problem above which you would expect to degrade reliability for any type of working unit.  When sailors are consistently working one hundred hour weeks, it's inevitable to the Rockhouse reliability will suffer.

Here's the part about using pencils:

Collectively, current and former officers said, the new rules mark several significant cultural shifts for the Navy’s tradition-bound fleets. At least for the moment, safety and maintenance are on par with operational security, and commanders are requiring sailors to use old-fashioned compasses, pencils and paper to help track potential hazards, as well as reducing a captain’s discretion to define what rules the watch team follows if the captain is not on the ship’s bridge.

- NYT

Editorials fly in every direction from that one but the Rockhouse isn't going to write one.  The Navy's reaction is typical of some common thinking about calculators, that those who can solve those types of problems without the calculator which have a fundamental advantage.

Here's some effort toward explanation:

There is little argument, however, that a shrinking Navy is performing the same duties that a larger fleet did a decade ago, and that constant deployments leave little time to train and maintain ships amid their relentless duties.

- NYT

Sure there's argument since a shrinking Navy was intentional due to the greater capability of modern vessels.  The other side of it is the Navy is over-committed in too many hostile engagements.

There's a great deal more on the matter in the source article for the interested student but the Rockhouse is most interested in the use of pencils and old equipment for a more reliable result.  One of the most consistent arguments from the Rockhouse is more technology is better but that isn't apparently what the Navy discovered.

It may seem the sailors were at fault:

Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told senators during a hearing on Tuesday about his visit to the Navy destroyer Barry several months ago, and of his learning that the ship had been at sea for 70 percent of the past 12 months.

“When we go back now and we look at were they able to do all the training necessary, and what was their life like during those 12 months, 70 percent of the time underway is an unsustainable rate,” General Dunford said.

- NYT

What do you mean you didn't know, General?

As said the Times, the proposed solutions are simple common sense.  The way the situation got like this is not common sense but the Rockhouse isn't interested in pursuing that aspect.  Here at the Rockhouse, the much larger question is whether advanced technology is the godsend it's often touted to be.  I've frequently touted various types of technology as a godsend for various different fields and, hence, the interest.

Thank you to Pink for the information.

Who Really Interfered with Election 2016 | Wildest Answer Yet

The "Pentagon Press Briefing" video may be agreeable or not depending on your political conviction.  Centrist Democrats are usually the most insistent on hacking by Russians as the explanation for everything from biting flies to afternoon traffic jams so possibly they will take offense.  Unknown.

Language may be offensive to some as well but the Rockhouse just sees harmless comedy in it.  If SNL had done anything like this then I might have watched more than one show.  Comedy needs risk to have any real bite.

You're duly forewarned of the potential for offense but it's funny and its irreverence may amuse more than offend and I ga-ron-tee you haven't heard this explanation previously.

Have a ball.

How Much You're Going to Earn Based on Your Major #College

There has been quite a bit of discussion on Ithaka about the American education system and there was frequent agreement on the radical methods needed to improve it.  For example, college and high school are not the only types of schools in America and there needs to be better placement of kids in the most appropriate type of school such as trade schools, etc.  Hopefully such things will come about in the near future but we don't need any editorial on why they will or they won't.

This article is quite a bit more pragmatic about education since it's listing the salary to start and after ten years for any given major and they provide a lot of them.

Every college major available has been ranked

Researchers have worked out the highest paying majors in America for 2017-18, revealing them in a list of over 450 different courses.

Experts at Payscale have ranked every major in the nation based on how much you earn within five years of graduating (early career salary) and after 10 years of graduating (mid-career).

Good news for anyone studying Engineering of any kind – it makes up nine of the top 10 high-earning majors. Petroleum Engineering comes in at number one with a starting salary of almost $100,000. Here’s the top 10, ranked by early career pay.

The Tab:  This is how much you’re going to earn, based on your major

The Rockhouse interest is that the disparities in compensation for different majors look like about what you would expect for which ones pull the big bucks and which ones don't.  For a bit of whimsy, Cadillac Man, History and Anthropology start out reasonably well but the peak after ten years isn't too impressive and both do about the same.

Probably not surprising is that a degree in Arts doesn't start out well and doesn't build much at the peak.  That comes to another topic which has come up from time to time as to whether a college-education is required to teach job readiness in whatever field to have any real value.  The Rockhouse thinking is a college education is worth it for its own sake regardless of employability at the graduation.

There's no need to resolve which is better since it's a different strokes kind of thing and opinions will vary.

To have high confidence on the numbers in the report, investigating their credibility further is necessary.   Even so, there seems little reason for them to distort the truth of this type of report.  It may have some value to people who are younger and may not have seen such a salary breakdown previously.  The differences in salaries for each major may be illuminating.

Although classroom education is one of my last interests for my situation, reviewing the different majors was surprisingly interesting.

Here's a small sample:

Anthropology – $40,500 – $63,200

Apparel Merchandising – $42,200 – $70,800

Applied Computer Science – $53,100 – $88,800

Applied Mathematics – $57,600 – $113,200

Applied Physics – $56,900 – $102,500

Architectural Engineering – $61,200 – $95,100

Architectural Technology – $44,800 – $73,000

Architecture – $45,200 – $83,100

Art – $37,000 – $59,600

Art & Design – $39,000 – $66,200

Art History – $41,100 – $65,400

Athletic Training – $36,800 – $54,100

- Tab

Have a ball with it and make of it what you will.

For Most Unusual Change Yet, Now You Can Marry Yourself

Sometimes we need a story which is demented beyond anything anyone is likely to understand except for the people who do it since they stage elaborate marriage ceremonies with all the elaboration of any wedding except there may be a bride or a groom but not both.  How about ten grand for a random number to guess at what somewhat splashy weddings cost so this person actually thought it would have some serious value to her life and she's not at all the only one who celebrates a solo marriage.

Note:  there's nothing of questionable taste in the article since my interest is the strange much more than whatever alternative prurience is engendered by it.

There's no particular editorial about it since the Rockhouse assessment is it wastes a lot of money but so what and the celebrants don't agree anyway.  It's bemusing to me yet they seem to be clear to some purpose.

An Italian bride has ditched the traditional two-person approach to marriage by hosting a bizarre solo wedding.

Lissone resident Laura Mesi invited 70 guests to a farmhouse in Vimercate, north of Milan, Monday to see her walk down the aisle resplendent in a Swarovski diamond encrusted wedding dress – the only thing missing, however, was a groom.

Mesi told Il Giorno national newspaper that she made the decision to marry herself after failing to find a suitable husband before the age of 40.

RT:   Italian woman marries herself in lavish ‘sologamy’ ceremony

Zen Yogi:  she's a comely young lass and she looks happy so her Zen Moment appears to be a great one even though I don't understand it

That puzzlement is the interest, Yogi, since she looks as happy as a butterfly in a field full of flowers.

I have no particular criticism since it's unusual but it's harmless.  The greater unusual is it seems there is something of a sologamous movement and multiple people are doing it.

Known as ‘sologamy,’ advocates of self-marriage claim the non-legally binding union can help foster a better understanding of oneself and “harmonize your external relationships.”

- RT

There really is some kind of movement so that should nicely enhance your puzzlement.

Zen Yogi:  why present it, Silas?

It's the curiosity at an Unusual Sociological Puzzle, Yogi.

Zen Yogi:  the story may be top-to-bottom hogwash

The First Rule of the Internet is whatever you're reading probably isn't true but Russia Today has been a reliable source for years so that gives the story an extra bump toward authenticity.

I feel [like] a healthy person… and happy and I have a good opinion of myself,” Mesi said following a lavish ceremony involving a three tier wedding cake.

“Some people might criticize me, but I’m convinced that I have done nothing wrong. I’m so happy and above all I crowned my dream.”

The single spouse admitted that she could marry someone in the future, but she said that her happiness does not depend on it.

- RT

Zen Yogi:  maybe she just has a huge need for attention

Maybe but it seems this would a huge hassle for only that.

Zen Yogi:  and you're really not going to ridicule her?

No, it just looks odd since blowing that money for week in the islands seems a much cooler thing to do but you can see this had a great deal of meaning to her.

Zen Yogi:  you know you won't find answer for why she does it, right?

Yep, it's just novel to see she and others doing this while there's so much angry conflict with other forms of marriage.  There's no way to tell if she is mocking such other marriages or if she is joining them to be part of a larger change.

In other words, sometimes Millennials are just fun to watch.

Zen Yogi:  well, thanks, Silas ... I think
