Disabling a Skunk's Stink Squirters

The skunk farm selling them for $500 to $600 and mentioned in the laudable Buy Silas a Skunk GoFundMe Campaign makes routine procedure of removing the stinker capability from the skunks.

That it's a routine procedure doesn't necessarily make it a good routine procedure and German doctors are rigid about any type of cosmetic surgery on animals.  It's not necessary for the health of the animal to remove the scent glands so they will not do it.

That includes a docked tail or clipped ears for a Boxer and they won't do such surgery simply because it's traditional.  Doberman, this means you too.  Lovable floppy ears for you, buddy.

That position is rigid but same as the routine and maybe it's not good to be so rigid.  Overall it seems an extremely good thing but whether it's too extreme in scope is valid to ask.  Perhaps the pain is negligible for skunks and it doesn't affect their behavior.

It's probably a dodge to ask as we don't like it even if something doesn't cause any pain.  If someone uses dye or food coloring to change the color of a duckling or a bunny, most of us think that's highly fucked-up even though it probably does the animal no harm.

(Ed:  getting squeamish about the procedure for descenting the skunk?)

I already was and that's been the biggest consideration in reviewing.  This skunk farm does it routinely for all of the baby skunks.  That's additional information I did not have before so what do we glean from that.

For my take it means it's more likely ok to do it but it's still most likely unethical.

(Ed:  what if you choke and decide no?)

Then I take the money contributors have sent to the campaign and use that to buy chocolates.  I'm sure they won't mind, right?

(Ed:  you don't even like chocolates!)

Well, no, not all that much but I could force myself ... for them.

Check out this guy.  These are some seriously beautiful animals!  Those are natural colors and not the result of some twisted breeding program.  I love the goofy way they walk around not particularly concerned about anything.
