A Cop Who Gets it Right - Hat Tip

A highway cop in Ohio, Joshua Hilling, encountered some guy walking along the highway and that's illegal due to proximity to fast-moving vehicles, etc.  The guy went crazy almost immediately, pulled out a large knife, and threatened to kill the cop.  The threat to the cop's life was clear and immediate.

Usually how that goes is the quick firing of every round in the cop's service revolver and the immediate expiration of the bad guy in the tradition of Judge Dredd.

I AM THE LAW.

That isn't what happened.  (CNN:  Murder suspect surprises cop with knife)

The video tells the entire story and the bad guy is still alive to tell his side of it although the video evidence shows it isn't likely to keep him out of jail.

Note:  it may be difficult to discern but the cop did fire one and only one round.  His purpose was clearly to stop the guy without killing him.  The cop sounded panicked but he always maintained his distance from the guy and never lost control.  He knew through it all he could simply snuff the guy but he didn't want to do it.

The restraint shown by this cop is the finest kind of police work so our question is how did this guy get the regular cop training and those others just got the hired gun training (i.e. it's not a problem if you kill it).

We have been appalled multiple times by seeing cops shooting to kill a bad guy rather than shooting to stop the crime by disabling the perpetrator.  That shoot-to-kill policy is a major problem and it's been openly stated more than once it's the only way to ensure the arresting cop's safety.

Perhaps.  The safety of eleven hundred civilians didn't make it last year, tho.
