Ford GT40 Trivia from Le Mans

There was a contest over whether Dan Gurney was one of the pilots in 1966 when the Ford GT40 finished 1-2-3 at Le Mans.  In fact, he was not.

Bruce McClaren was one of the drivers in 1966 and it was 1967 in which Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt won it but that finish was not 1-2-3 due to pressure from Ferrari.

There was also a contest regarding the racing colors for the car and I'll stand by that one.  Here are two pics from the finish in 1966.

We can't tell the colors of the third car so much but the first and second cars are fairly clear with only the second showing the colors generally calling the racing colors for GT40.

Here's another one.

Here the colors are readily seen and this is flogged a little bit because a 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans is just about the ultimate in automotive coolness.  The only thing cooler would be if Zeus arranged a race at Olympus.

Those are pics of the 66 race when Edsell Ford said he will beat Ferrari. The paint scheme is more iconic because of the McQueen movie LeMans where the entire team is painted in those colors

As to the color controversey. The difference in definition of lead car needs to be clarified. And then we are both correct.
You list black as the lead car on the track I list Gulf color of the lead car on the team wearing #1

The black car was not the actual race leader?? The black car was painted #2 and the car in more or less classic colors was painted #1 but appeared to finish second. I don't mean to argue over fine points, there's just some confusion, and "Winning" makes sense for the legend.

The Black car wins with McClaren. The iconic paint job doesnt win until 68 and 69.
I did make a mistake as Lemans features the Gulf paint scheme but on Porsche 917s

I dont see the Newman correlation as he raced Datsuns then Nissans and Porsches I dint remember him racing GT40s

Now I see it on the win and the colors.

Whoops, that was McQueen in "Winning" but unsure of the cars.

Nope Winning is the documentary of Paul Newman's race career
Lemans is McQueen and based on 1970s when Gulf moved to sponsoring Porsche.
If you check on the finish its was team orders to set the finish

I get it on the movies now.

Ah, the much-hated team orders! Hell of a strange way to win something.
