Aruba, One Happy Island

Aruba may be my favorite place in the Universe as they're not kidding, it is one happy island.  No-one is tense about anything and things happen when they happen.  I get to it, man, take it easy.  Yah, take it easy.  That's the great island vibe and I'm on my way for some of that.

My companion and I flew out of Providence and those are fantastic moments when you get onto the aircraft in the cold and get off it, five hours later, on an island where the temperature stays around 82F all year 'round.

Everything is so laid back in the day time and at night you go out for this.

Cuban dancers and they are fantastic.  They dance these incredible shows and you would see them later dancing even more at the clubs around town.  It's one happy island, for sure.

But not yet as we settled into the flight for five hours.  We would go by way of Atlanta so that took us down the entire East coast.  It was a beautiful morning and the pilot remarked of the incredible view of New York City as we flew past.  He said we would also get a great view of Washington as we flew South to Atlanta.

The pilot didn't say much after that but we weren't waiting for it anyway since the only thing you have available to you on an aircraft is to sleep.  There was some movie available but airlines have a knack for finding movies you have already seen or you would not have watched so that comes to the same answer:  sleep and wake-up for the sunshine in a few hours.

That worked about as well as it ever does on an aircraft when you go into that Twilight Zone of not really awake or asleep but time seems to move faster so that works just fine.  The next thing we knew, the hostess was advising us to buckle up for Atlanta and this is grand because it's the halfway point.  Come on, One Happy Island.

Please return your tray tables to the upright position for landing.

The landing was unusual as it seemed faster than normal.  Usually when the pilot kicks in the thrust reversers, the aircraft slows gently but the pull forward against the seat belt was noticeable and, well, this is exciting.  Hopefully this is a sign of an exciting holiday.

As soon as we were at the terminal, people started pulling out cellphones because somewhere else has just got to be more interesting than wherever anyone may be.

Immediately the buzz went around the cabin, New York has been bombed.  Millions of people are dead.  We may be at war.

The time was somewhere around 8:30 a.m. when we took off from Providence.  The day was 9/11.

The aircraft on which we were flying would have been a perfect choice for the bombers as one of the others flew out of Boston.  The timing of the take-off would have been perfect as we flew past New York City only a few minutes before the strike.

Up until that time, we knew nothing of what had happened.  Once inside the terminal, we heard rumors there were hijacking implements discovered in wastebaskets in the Atlanta airport.  To this day I do not know if anything was discovered at the Providence airport.

Note:  the story uses the Colonel Potter Just Died technique and this may seem like dramatization but it is exactly what happened to everyone.  We did not know until we landed.  Thanks for understanding and I know you do since this one is already pushed into What's Hot for the Last 7 Days.

The Colonel Potter technique came from M*A*S*H which was a comedy but it was set during a war.  Everybody loved Colonel Potter and he was killed flying home.  That message was delivered at the end of the last show.
