After all the destruction from Hurricane Sandy, a great many Republican Senators, perhaps all of them, made a quite spectacular show of their unwillingness to provide Federal disaster relief to the afflicted states. According to report, there is still widespread destruction in New Jersey but it is unknown how much the repairs have been limited by money, resources, or both. Senators Tom Coburn and Jim Imhofe were very clear in their opposition to disaster aid at that time.
However, there is a little problem: both of these Senators are from the state of Oklahoma. There is another little problem in that Oklahoma took a pretty destructive beating from a tornado on Monday. Their words on Federal disaster aid have now have more waffles than you could expect from Aunt Jemima in a lifetime. (CNN: CNN Exclusive: Oklahoma senators on disaster relief funding)
According to Senator Tom Coburn, any disaster aid would have to have some type of budgetary offset. We think maybe he means a bake sale or perhaps he could sell something he already has: the mountain of waffles he has already created.
As a result of the opposition from Republican Senators such as Tom Coburn and Jim Imhofe, relief for the victims of Hurricane Sandy was at most about twenty percent of what was proposed.
While giving a speech on "Crow as a Good Source of Protein" to the Maryland Bridge and Garden Club, Senator John Boehner said he will, "work with the administration on making sure they have the resources they need to help the people of Oklahoma."
