Voodoo Shilton - Dazzlement

Voodoo Shilton's name comes up a lot here as he's consistently turning in blow away performances at Cat's Art MusikCircus.  You can hear him there most Fridays at 3:00 pm SLT.

As in previous reports, I'm astounded by Voodoo's latest additions of the flute and the saxophone.  He's incredibly expressive with them and he's using them quite a bit now.  Where he kills with them are the lead lines he plays as he's not at all doing simple riffs but rather he goes out there taking risks and it sounds immensely cool.

At the same time he has incredible skill on guitar and he's blazing fast but it never feels like science or a recital.  He has a real gift for making it intensely live.  Even when he plays at incredible speed it's with precision and if he does make a mistake he can recover so quickly that he would be the only one who knew it happened.

To me, the real magic and the telling of a guitarist isn't playing fast but playing slowly.  The touch is crucial at any speed but at low speed every nuance of your touch is heard.  That will either sound beautifully lyrical ... or really horrible.  Voodoo brings a gentle elegance to playing slowly and it's very much a lyrical style.

Something you may not know is his bass is not electric but rather acoustic and it has exceptional tone.  He also brings in an udu sometimes but he's even used a peanut butter jar at times.  It looks like just about anything is a musical instrument to Voodoo and that really sets him apart.

Voodoo Shilton has been voted winner of the AVI Choice Award for Best Jazz and deservedly so.  He's an extraordinary talent and the only way you can really appreciate what I say is to come out to hear him, preferably at Cat's Art MusikCircus.

You can learn more about Voodoo on his Artist Profile on the MusikCircus Web site.  You will find a PlayList of some of his videos on YouTube along with a link to his YouTube channel to find more.
