Phoenix J Starts her Run at Cat's Art MusikCircus

Phoenix J is a highly-talented and experienced musician who has sung professionally for years, with or without a band, and traveled a great deal in doing it.  You can learn more about her by visiting her Artist Profile on the MusikCircus Web site.

Phoenix J is playing in a very cool studio and you can see pictures of it on her Facebook page.  You can tell it is a cool studio because she bumps her guitar into other stuff in it with some regularity.  There's really no harm in that as it doesn't hurt the guitar unless you really, really whack it but it's charming that she gets so contrite over having done it.

She is playing her set using an instrument, a keyboard, a looper, and who knows what else.  She's definitely not a karaoke queen with an iPod, the lady has learned her craft very well and in multiple ways.  It was interesting hearing of her talking about her looper last night as the enthusiasm for them hasn't been so high with female performers but Phoenix J is all over it and she uses it well.

The Phoenix J plays her set for about half an hour and you may think after that you've got her performance figured.  She will be playing cover tunes but she swings them around to give them a jazzy beat and make it fun to hear them again.  She's very good at it and you may think this is the extent of what she does ... until she switches to her originals which are quite a different package.

There's a sensitivity and fragility to Phoenix J's original songs which is quite beautiful and she delivers them in a very different way from the jazzy pop style she uses for cover songs.  Her jazzy pop is entertaining and it's fun but her originals are how she will really capture you.  The feeling from her as she sings them is much stronger but with a lovely delicacy and there's no doubt they are her own.

Phoenix J started a run of bi-weekly shows at Cat's Art MusikCircus last night and she will now be performing every second Friday.  This is a wonderful addition to the Friday line-up and hopefully we will see you there next time.
