In case you doubt at all his greatness, here's one of his speeches.
The full text of the speech he gave is available at The History Place.
He went to jail for twenty-seven years from that trial and the beauty part is the CIA caused his arrest. Donald Rickard was CIA and he announced his part of it just before he died. (BBC: Nelson Mandela: CIA tip-off led to 1962 Durban arrest)
The CIA denied it but they deny just about everything to maintain their solid reputation as some of the most untrustworthy snakes on the planet. JFK, the great liberal god of the Twentieth Century who wasn't even a pimple on FDR's ass, can't wash this blood off his hands because it happened in 1962, right during his watch.
It's not clear how long Washington has been pursuing regime changes in other countries by legal or illegal means but the arrogant disgrace goes at least back to 1962. Eisenhower did nothing to reject Truman's plan for a coup in Iran so he looks generally good but he still smells too. It was the same with LBJ who was known for civil rights but who also engineered the escalation of the Vietnam War because he was as much of a pussy in front of the Pentagon as any who have come since. The salient fact from all of those efforts is none of them worked, despite tedious GOP histrionics to the contrary.
The only war America ever won in almost a hundred years was WWII but they would have been annihilated if not for Russia playing such an enormous part of it and which America blithely ignored forever after in saying how they won WWII. The simple fact is they didn't and only the Allies did it. Britain doesn't matter now but they were a significant military power and America couldn't have done it without them either.
If there is any single country trying to effect regime change, the Grand Prize Winner for the worst at it is easily taken by America. There are good things about the country but there are also vile disgraces and this is one of them.
Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was born the son of a Tembu tribal chieftain at Qunu, near Umtata, in South Africa. He renounced his right to succeed his father and instead chose a political career. He attended college, became a lawyer, joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and helped found its powerful Youth League.
In 1962, he was arrested by South African security police for his opposition to the white government and its apartheid ("separateness") policies of racial, political, and economic discrimination against the nonwhite majority. In 1964, the government brought further charges including sabotage, high treason and conspiracy to overthrow the government. This is Mandela's statement from the dock at the opening of his defense in the 1964 trial.
