How POL Arida Kicks Your Ass

Many, many videos have come out of Second Life.  Some of the most radical and distinctive have come from POL Arida in Edinburgh.

There are two very powerful ingredients in POL's videos, big thinking and monochrome.  Yah, monochrome.

There is tremendous power in a monochrome background and one where you may be most familiar is in Italian art movies in which everything is sharply black and white.  Any video shot in an entirely white room (i.e. floors, walls, ceilings) cannot help but be dramatic.

Another form of monochrome is a greenscreen as this let's you use chroma key masking.  In this way you can take out the background altogether and substitute whatever you like.  Maybe you're just dying to participate in a grunnion run.  If yes, then get some video of those little fishy runners and put yourself with them, no problem.

These kinds of techniques are quite simple but are immensely powerful.  To take full advantage of them you will most likely need studio space but that's cool too as it would be much better to rent for a short time such places than to have an area in your house that must remain perpetually all-white, all-lime green, etc.

As to how he designs the content of his videos ... well, that's an entirely different thing and you'll need to talk to him about that.
