What About When the Brain Police Really Can Reprogram You

Researchers have located fear memories within the brain and they believe they have the techniques to remove them.  If that's not reprogramming, it's sure a generic substitute.  (Science Daily:  Reconditioning the brain to overcome fear)

Researchers have discovered a way to remove specific fears from the brain, using a combination of artificial intelligence and brain scanning technology. Their technique, published in the inaugural edition of Nature Human Behaviour, could lead to a new way of treating patients with conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and phobias.

Already we don't like this at the Rockhouse but it gets better.

"To apply this to patients, we need to build a library of the brain information codes for the various things that people might have a pathological fear of, say, spiders" adds Dr Seymour."Then, in principle, patients could have regular sessions of Decoded Neurofeedback to gradually remove the fear response these memories trigger."

Holy shit!  They want to make a subroutine library of fears to remove them at will.

CRISPR is the technique by which researchers perform physical edits on DNA to dice, splice, and contort it to their nefarious designs.  Now maybe we can look forward to the Brain CRISPR in which we can edit out the bits we don't like.

Sometimes there's some alarm at throwing fireballs around the place without much of any ethical consideration and this type of thing looks like one of them.  The idea of editing things out of the brain is so repugnant it calls immediately to the Brain Police.

Go with all the sci fi you like for this one but, as above, we don't like it.

A case study in me is an acute fear of heights to the point I feel like the ground tips as I get closer to the edge.  How about if Doctor Freud can remove that fear of heights with three easy treatments.  What's the willingness to be reprocessed in this way.

We loathe people who ask questions and then answer them so fill in the answer yourself as I'm sure you can easily deduce it.
