Beautiful Russian Women in a Traditional Wedding

Centuries of tradition swirl around Anna Shustikova’s photos of Russian weddings, as costumes and rituals collide with contemporary life.  Here, Volga-dwelling Mari women pray just before a wedding.

Shustikova’s images can be seen during performances and on selected open days at the Royal Albert Hall, London, to 11 December.

Perhaps it appears I'm trying to be facetious about beautiful women but the one in the foreground is wearing a few years and she shows not so many signs of wrinkles.  You should look so good at that age, darlin'.

Anna Shustikova, winner of the Royal Photographic Society’s under-30s Gold Award, is a documentary photographer and writer in Moscow, whose images of Russian weddings show a clash of tradition and modernity.

You can see from the above photograph Ms Shustikova has the simpatico with the people she sees and she has the skills to capture that.  The exposure for the photograph is perfect and immediately invites a question of why the wedding is not bathed in light.  Every detail is revealing because these are not at all wealthy people and yet the wedding is as you see (for this part of it).

Gypsy boys and girls often get married around the age of 13 or 14. They often end up leaving school, and their lives change completely

There's no detail about the bride but see the article via the link at the top for a great many more photographs from Anna Shustikova.  Here at the Rockhouse, we're immensely impressed with the sensitivity of her work.  Anyone can take color photographs but usually only artists can bring the best out of B&W.
