Putin - Most Influential Leader in the World?

According to Forbes magazine, Vladimir Putin is now regarded as the most powerful leader in the world.  Obama has done a pretty good job of making sure the title doesn't go to the White House but it's still remarkable to see this change.

The public relations campaign has been pretty obvious and the drive toward the Sochi Olympics has been more spectacular than any similar event I've ever seen.

But maybe people don't know that Putin was the leader of Stasi, the East German secret police, while the Soviet Union held it.

It's tough to know what to make of things.  Is Putin changed, faking, or a plastic fantastic lover.

It's an interesting process to observe.  The Olympics spectacular is impressive but it's cosmetic.  Something I regarded as substantive was Putin's command of the situation in Syria in which the U.S. backed down from a military assault and yesterday it was announced that all of Syria's facilities to manufacture chemical weapons have now been dismantled.  This is not the word of Assad but rather of the team sent in to do the dismantling.

Make of it what you will.
