Unlike a whole lot of places, Ithaka really is a democracy and we will listen to anything so long as it's not bullshit and we're all capable of recognizing it no matter how much pols try to pass it off as sugar.
For example, Ted Cruz is heralding his breathtaking idea of defunding the United Nations but most or all of you know that comes straight from a billboard from the Fifties from the John Birch Society which proclaimed Get U.S. Out of the U.N. Welcome to the future, Ted. Oh, by the way ... Bullshit.
Note: in case you missed it, those Bircher billboards were all over the place along highways in the Sixties and my family missed the McCarthy period in the Fifties but, fortunately, there was Hillary Clinton to start that Red baiting all over again.
There's a whole lot of screeching about we can't trust Trump but the thing really biting them in their precious little pink drillies is you can trust him ... to stick to things you really hate. He hasn't shown any particular imagination and has been working the GOP Playbook from cover to cover. The untrustworthy thing about Obama wasn't that he worked the Democratic Party Playbook but rather that he didn't.
Trump is also working the suck ass parts of the GOP program since he threw out protection for gender benders when he issued an Executive Order to stop creating toilets for transgender people or changing law to permit them use of a different toilet in some other arrangement.
That change was vindictive crap and you know perfectly well it has nothing to do with protecting children since an offense of that nature against a child by a trans person has never happened.
The fact of the matter is the last news of anyone getting busted in a toilet for sex with someone who's legally a child was a politician in, I think, Minnesota and he was having sex with someone aged sixteen or seventeen in a rest area for a highway. Usually it's Republicans getting busted for that but this one was a Democrat and there was nothing about him which appeared like a transvestite.
Even liberals get torqued over this crap since maybe I'm taking my liberal kid to use the toilet in that highway rest area so I seriously don't need to take my kid past some skank politician getting a blow job at a picnic table.
Fox: Democrat Caught Having Sex with 17-Year-Old Boy at Rest Stop
There hasn't been much reason to comment about Trump since all of us listened to him for a while so we could hear it from him rather than some CNN or Fox yahoo telling us what he would say. My pitch hasn't changed throughout that keeping us in a non-radioactive state is paramount. There was zero confidence Obama's provocation as Clinton said she would continue would give any surety of staying non-radioactive.
Trump has now exceeded the Republican mandate in terms of announcing he intends to achieve nuclear superiority over Russia. The statement is in specific violation of the START treaties which go back forty years or so.
There may be some value in Trump's move since it emphasizes the fundamental absurdity of these treaties when it only takes some yahoo with a bad haircut to smash them all to hell. The treaties are absurd at their root anyway since they make a big deal of strategic nukes ... so the Pentagon wiseguys go to town developing tactical nukes. It would take careful study but there's a serious chance the nuclear agreements haven't reduced development of nuclear weapons but rather increased it in variety and scope.
Wings Over the World took over after the WWII became WWIII in "Things to Come" (1938 sci fi movie) and the group was comprised of logicians and scientists who would rebuild a world reduced to rubble and pestilence. They did accomplish that and they built that new world but then a group of fundamentalists rose up against them. At the last, they launched a couple of their juniors into space while the fundamentalists created havoc in their new world to presumably wreck it all over again.
Ed: thanks for that hopelessness!
Whether it's really hopeless is the question and the one definite way to ensure hopelessness is if these Democrats keep acting like Mitch McConnells who will resist everything. Lack of focus is almost a textbook definition of hopelessness. You may not like the Rockhouse focus but there's plenty of it.
While Gauthier from that rest area toilet is just a boil on a sick society, he gets some minor focus as an example of topics to avoid. Yevette reported on a number of Look What the Damn GOP Did Now things but they don't serve much purpose beyond dragging us into it too.
This relates directly to success with diets due to positive thinking and I see damn little positive thinking from, well, much of anyone. (Ithaka: Dieting Success Predicted by Twitter Activity - Science)
Yah, Trump is doing some shitty things and I don't like them but most of them have been predictable and none of them has been impeachable. Ithaka isn't going to get sucked into that rat race of raucous rabble since see above about lack of focus.
Maybe you think the idea of Rock Cities is ludicrous and think what you will but building them is a vision of the things humans are capable of accomplishing if we get our shit together to do them. There is immense positivity here because the belief is real that we can do that but always there's the question of whether we will.
The general hysteria we're getting is that Trump will bring about the next Dark Age but that attributes to him rather more power than he's really got unless he really does get us nuked but that's not a Dark Age; that isn't anything.
The bombardment of Impeach Trump hysteria got so intense I mostly bailed from any social networks. There may be reason somewhere but you won't find it there.
There's been a general lessening of how much got reported on Ithaka regarding this or that political statement since they have meant less and less when the overall picture is already clear with hard-core nationalists rising in multiple countries in which the hatred of Muslims has been played to the great amusement of all.
Geert Wilders has been saying things so despicable he would not so many years ago have been called out as an offense against humanity but now he's just reported as more news.
Wilders isn't significant except as part of the overall phenomenon so the day-to-day on him has little value when yeah, yeah, he said another shitty thing. This time it was Moroccans are scum or something of that nature.
I've seen in Comments how some of you have been less than impressed with Trump's appointments and that gave the sense you see him as just another politician. I do still see him as more than that insofar as he adheres to the party platform. There was deep betrayal when Obama started playing mix-and-match with the Democratic Party platform but Trump does not seem to be doing that with his team.
Most of all the focus in Ithaka is toward 'things to come' and a lot of it is extremely good.
Ed: unless we fuck it up!
Yes but the more we focus on things which can fuck things up, the more we ensure they will fuck things up. If you don't have a better dream then why should anyone change anything. If you do then what is it?
For example, Ted Cruz is heralding his breathtaking idea of defunding the United Nations but most or all of you know that comes straight from a billboard from the Fifties from the John Birch Society which proclaimed Get U.S. Out of the U.N. Welcome to the future, Ted. Oh, by the way ... Bullshit.
