Orangutans Foundation International

Let's skip getting weepy about orangutans and get to where anyone can do anything about them.  The logic leading to this was life is crap ... what brings goodness ... orangutans.

The smallest contribution OFI will accept is $35 which is a wee problem just now but I will remember this because orangutans are the prime symbol for me of creatures which do absolutely nothing to hurt anyone and yet get wasted for it.  Web:  Orangutan Foundation International (rated 92.7 by Charity Navigator)

This is something for King Tut the Orangutan from the Cincinnati Zoo and he was one old guy.  He was locked in one of those horribly-primitive square cells with bars and concrete walls.  He had nothing to do all day but sit there.  I would look at those baleful eyes and there was the universe in them but there was only vacancy around me.  Kid fantasies came of maybe there's a way to break him out of there.

He was such a beautiful creature, apart from being far overweight, and he had the striking face mask the males get.  That made him look infinitely regal and he held that reposed calm of royalty but it's a nightmare to imagine what he what he was really thinking.  Even though he had nothing else, he was safe there and that can be a whole lot for animals which are routinely plundered by poachers, etc.

Maybe this seems basic bleeding heart but there are some areas in which a difference is possible.  Support for orangutans gets a fairly good amount of money and attention so it seems reasonable to believe they might even be saved by the work along with enough ongoing support.

King Tut never did get free but he still has family out there somewhere, hopefully a lot of them.

That was over 40 years ago
The orangutan exhibit now is as large as he would normally travel
As a forager he only moves for two things
Three if you he could find a marula tree
His old enclosure is now a memorial to yesteryear zoos

As are the old bear dens those 20by20 concrete side by side, replace by huge open air enclosures with access to the inside enclosures

San Diego and Cinti are probably the best in the country at this.
San Diego raises the big cats with canine companions because they lower the stress on the cats
Very strange site to see a cheetah lying down with a greyhound nrxt to it

I knew there was improvement at the Cincinnati Zoo but I haven't ever seen it and I'm sure those cages were more of a heartbreaker for the people working there than anyone else could know. In fact, I did work there for a while and that was tres cool.

I do remember those bear cages and I shouldn't dwell on the terrible state previously but rather feel great joy that they do so much better now.

Yah, they're such gentle animals. I'm sure it's possible to annoy them but I suspect they would be more likely to retreat than attack. Now a chimp is a dangerous beastie! (larfs)

Cant count the morons that keep chimps as pets and then get mauled by them
Most zoos are incredibly animal friendly anymore.
Two required stops by the Fairy Princess are aquariums and zoos
She has probably 20 or so
And as,far as she is concerned if you dont close them then you missed something

Smiling as I think of taking a kid to a zoo. Dads have been taking kids to zoos since we were monkeys!

Unknown if you have seen the video of chimps when they are hunting. About fifteen of them set out and this is a military patrol. I don't know if it's possible to outrun a hungry chimp and I would just as soon not try.
