Lotho sent me this story and he's quite outraged about it. However, while the story is tragic, I really don't see news in it. (AP: 1 child dies, 1 hospitalized after cruise incident)
It seems obvious there was some grossly incompetent parenting involved but that's not necessarily true as the cruise ship has a program into which you can sign your children and they will managed, entertained, or whatever until you come back. Maybe that program was the actual failure, the news article is not clear about that.
As to why this story outraged Lotho, I'm not entirely clear on that either. For example, why not get pissed off about the father who snatches a kid to leverage the wife who is divorcing him ... or get angry about kids starving to death in Africa ... or any of the many daily tragedies that affect children. Perhaps it's that a cruise ship is supposed to represent an idyllic life in which there are no worries or concerns and nothing can go wrong ... until a kid drowns.
It's not my purpose to protest as you can get that for seventeen cents a pound on Facebook and all that ever comes from it is your ass will go to sleep if you stay in your chair to read it. What I can do is give this kid a tip of the Galactic Tour hat and hope his spirit is now free to travel in any way it likes.
Note: it was the Norwegian Jade from which a sailor was killed while I was in Katakolon. There are multiple dangers to these big ships. I mention this as it was a ship from the Norwegian line on which the kid drowned.
