A Novel Approach to Treatment of Chronic Pain #Science

When anything describes itself as game-changing, the Rockhouse is suspicious.  Cliche usually only leads to mediocrity and the idea of game-changing for pain management is ludicrous.  There is no game.  (Science Daily:  Game changing strategy for pain relief developed)

However ...

Researchers from Monash University have developed a new drug delivery strategy able to block pain within the nerve cells, in what could be a major development of an immediate and long lasting treatment for pain.

More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and this figure is expected to grow, driven by the increased life expectancy, increasing incidence of diabetes and cancer, combined with better survival rates, often leaving patients with severe and poorly treated pain. The global market for nerve pain treatments is over US$600 billion and yet current pain therapies are not completely effective and often suffer from unwanted side effects.

- SD

I've had chronic pain for twenty-five years and my approach has been ascetic in refusing pseudo-relief from opiates.  That's one approach but people try many to avoid those foul chemicals.

The science is going to go deep so hold your nose, mates.

Research published in the journal, Science Translational Medicine, reveals how a target protein, long known to be associated with both chronic and acute pain, works within the nerve cell. This protein is the NK1 receptor, the receptor of the neuropeptide substance P, which mediates pain transmission. Because of its association with pain and other diseases of the nervous system, many drug development attempts have focused on inhibiting this receptor, but the efficacy of these treatments has been very limited. This new work shows that such ineffectiveness could be in part because the treatments targeted the protein on the surface of the nerve cell.

- SD

The researchers already knew opiated pain relief doesn't work that well except for extreme cases of pain such as during palliative care and that goes far beyond chronic.

Note:  palliative care is that which is received in an end-of-life situation at a hospice.

From the research, they discovered why such chemical approaches have not worked too well since, like many things, they have only been attacking the problem on the surface.

Together they have found that the NK-1 receptor controls pain once it is inside the cell -- so drugs that merely block it when it is on the surface of the cell have little efficacy. Instead, this new research shows that, in animal models, if the NK-1 receptor is blocked once it enters the nerve cell, it is possible to suppress pain more effectively.

Dr Halls said that the new strategy of "targeting receptors inside the cell represents a new frontier in drug delivery and a novel therapeutic strategy for dealing with pain."

- SD

Rockhouse must emphasize this technique may not eliminate opiates.  Instead they're proposing a delivery system which looks like it has serious potential to make them work.

Watson:  would you take the opiates then?

Probably not although this may reduce the potential for prescribed addiction since pain relief may come through much lower doses if it's delivered effectively.

The Case Study in Practical Intelligence vs Creative Intelligence #Science

The researchers made the case there are fundamentally different types of manifestations of intelligence in humans.  He observes a practical intelligence which is good at fixing things, etc but its focus is so much on acquisition it comes to an intellectualized sociopathy.

Creative intelligence does what you would expect creativity to do and the good doctor only makes the point to observe some types of education don't work for some people.

As a general example of the sociopathy of Smart Fools, take a look at how Harvard's name is frequently associated with racism of late and the same phenomenon of Smart Fools exists in many fraternity houses since they have established a pattern of killing pledges in their hazing rituals.  The rituals have not stopped and thereby provide us another example of the sociopathy.

Ithaka:  The Good Doctor Says It's a Generation of Smart Fools Rather than Swine - Science

What I argue is that intelligence that’s not modulated and moderated by creativity, common sense and wisdom is not such a positive thing to have. What it leads to is people who are very good at advancing themselves, often at other people’s expense. We may not just be selecting the wrong people, we may be developing an incomplete set of skills—and we need to look at things that will make the world a better place.

- Scientific American (link is in the Ithaka article)

The case studies are Paul Ryan or Ted Cruz.  The CBO has advised his AHCA will kick twenty-three million off insurance but that doesn't faze him and he doesn't change.  That type of indifference is also observed in Ted Cruz who shut down the government multiple times without regard to any consequence so long as he got what he wanted.

The remarkable things is practical / creative intelligence does not have an obvious genetic path since the same divisive split occurs in families with those possessed of practical intelligence mystified by the creative intelligence.  Eliminating genetic components typically takes twin studies but the general genetic path doesn't seem to make much different when it can break out either way with only a few taking both.

The Magic Land is possessed of enormous creative intelligence and everyone there is broke since creativity doesn't often pay that much but there are not many conservatives since few of them ever play.  You my perceive a slanting in that, particularly if you approach it from the standpoint of practical intelligence, but review the rock world for conservatives and there are hardly any.  It's not so much they don't like rock but they can't do it themselves.

Just the same, creative intelligence is useless for solving many seemingly obvious problems since cloud castles never need water and they never will blow a fuse.

The latest Rockhouse epiphany is the genetics do not appear relevant and that gives some reason for thought since the root of it is the question of what turns people into consumers versus players even within the same group of people.  Logically it seems they should swing generally the same way but families don't and a group doesn't as a whole either.

The Rockhouse has no conclusion from that, only the observation.  Make of it what you will.

"The Traveler and the Elixir" #Poetry

The shepherd wanted to go walking
and he asked if I would mind
He was young and didn't know so much
and wasn't sure what he would find
I told him I would walk with him
but I needed to bring my ass
since he's loyal and he'll carry things
to help us as we go

We had walked for several days
when a Traveler came the other way
He asked us if he could talk with us
since he had some things to sell
He showed us his elixir
which cures all known human ills
and even if you drop it
flowers come where it has spilled

If you should drink this potion
with a woman at your side
then I positively guarantee
soon she will be your wife
There's almost nothing it can't do
it holds magic we can't grasp
but for this day I'll sell to you
for whatever you can pass

The shepherd looked right to me
to ask what he should do
I told him don't you touch it
I have seen this bottle before
The donkey here beside me
once sold carpets as a man
but he drank from that same bottle
and you see now how that ran

We will just keep walking
I don't know what we will find
there's so much for you to see yet
it will bring more to ease your mind
than any kind of elixir
where was ever known to man
since you will find that which you're seeking
but only if you can

Writing poems is better for sleeping
than you may ever do in counting sheep
even so I sometimes count elephants
because it's funny when they jump

"Henrietta in the Park" #Poetry

I'll take Henrietta to the park
since the likes to eat the flowers
when no-one can see her
and both of us will laugh
She plays her harmless prank
but the flowers don't much like it
as she eats them rank by rank
until all of them are gone

They will grow back in a hurry
since plants are good that way
A six-foot rabbit eats many flowers
but they'll come back another day
I'm starting to love Henrietta
although making bunnies is way too weird
but she gets to feeling frisky
and that gets me all a'feared.

But hearing of frisky bunnies
is not the story to tell
since she glories in the sunlight
as that always feels just swell
since no-one else can see her;
she can do whatever she wants
and usually that's eating flowers
but who knows her next response

She keeps telling me there's more
the Watchman is coming close
He's the bunny in the waistcoat
and he always seems morose
He's late, he's late
for a very important date
and we mustn't make him impatient
by causing him to wait

Henrietta wants to go to him
she said he's now close by
but that's a new adventure
I'm not so thrilled to try
but perhaps we will find that Watchman
to learn about his date
and we know before we get there
we mustn't make him late

Lewis Black Wanted a Meme So Now He Has this One

At first I brought out the arty kit since I thought it might need a bubble to make it look like a cartoon but decided that would make him look like a politician and they probably don't like him too much since he knows too much about the Bill of Rights since he didn't stop with the Fourth Amendment.

Therefore, pragmatic seemed the direction to make it seem like he considers the question.  Maybe it works.  Unknown.

Let Freedom Laugh and hear about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in an hour and half than you'll ever learn from Washington ... and he's funny.

Don't bail before you hear Dick Gregory at +4:45.

Seems a Reasonable Question to Ask | Thank you, Shady

Ronald Reagan was in a piece-of-crap movie called "Storm Warning" from the 40s or 50s so he was definitely well aware of the KKK.  Reagan didn't do anything about the KKK when the had the power to act and thus we observe the difference between Washington and Hollywood.  Ideals may hold high in Tinsel Town but everything goes to shit in D.C.

The True Story of Colonel Abuthnot Jones

The history goes back to when I was a Gypsy orphan in Paris making chalk drawings on the sidewalks for tips from the American tourists.   I saw a guitar in the window of a shop across the street and I knew someday when I made enough stupid drawings that guitar could be mine.

After some years I turned to crime but nothing all that bad.  Even so they captured me and sent me to the Foreign Legion.  I spent years more out in the desert, riding my camel, serving France, but along the way I did find a guitar and slowly learned to play.  Out there in the desert moonlight, under that ever lonely Moon, I plunked and plunked on that guitar until I could at least get it into tune.

Out there I learned with my camel, there's nothing much in the desert except ancient bones of ancestors.  I found life in the Foreign Legion was much like the Pentagon since I didn't really do a thing but I still wound up a Colonel, the Hero of the Empty Desert.

That was many years ago and the guitar isn't feeling so well so then I turned to poetry and, as you can readily tell, I should have stayed in the Legion where the camel loved my verse.  It didn't understand a word I said but camels love to hear the words.

Now you know ... the Rest of the Story

ABC Offers a Guide on Global Warming and Consequences of Paris Accords

There's a pile of annoying 'splainin' up front for people who lived in caves in Siberia and then it gets down to the so what from pulling out of the Paris Accord.

The Associated Press interviewed dozens of scientists and consulted computer simulations, and they say without the U.S. pledges, the dangerous 2-degree rise is nearly inescapable.

But they also say that even with the U.S. doing its share, preventing that warming is going to be unlikely and will require even more cuts than contained in the Paris agreement.

University of Oklahoma meteorology professor Jason Furtado said blowing past the 2-degree mark would be a potential "tipping point" that would lead to "a new and irreversible state in the climate system."

ABC:  A guide to global warming, Paris pact and the US role

When the Rockhouse gets to cliche, it's time to exit and the idea of tipping points has come to mean everything up to the plastic toy bird which bobs for ice cubes in your friendly suburban bar.

Note:  beware of friendly suburban bars since the people coming out of there likely drive and they may kill you without even remembering it.

While it's fashionable to believe such pollution started with the Industrial Revolution, it actually preceded that by about two millennia when humans started smelting ore for minerals.  Humans haven't been polluting the air for two hundred years; the figure is closer to two thousand.

A new study combining European ice core data and historical records of the infamous Black Death pandemic of 1349-1353 shows metal mining and smelting have polluted the environment for thousands of years, challenging the widespread belief that environmental pollution began with the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s and 1800s.  (Science Daily: Human activity has polluted European air for 2,000 years)

But ... don't worry; be happy.

Phys.org:  Acidified ocean water widespread along North American West Coast

A three-year survey of the California Current System along the West Coast of the United States found persistent, highly acidified water throughout this ecologically critical nearshore habitat, with "hotspots" of pH measurements as low as any oceanic surface waters in the world.

The researchers say that conditions will continue to worsen because the atmospheric carbon dioxide primarily to blame for this increase in acidification has been rising substantially in recent years.

At the same time, California seeks to align with China for people more sensible about pollution and climate change than America.  I don't currently have the link for that but it came in a statement for Jerry Brown, Governor of California.

I only did what Goldman Sachs had told me so what else was I supposed to do. - Hillary Clinton

In her latest public appearance, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blamed the Democratic Party, the media, “weaponized information” and even a thousand Russians for her loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Clinton told an audience at the annual Code Conference in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California, on Wednesday that the most important lesson from the election was the new “war” on information.

RT:  Hillary Clinton: I was victim of ‘1,000 Russian agents’ & ‘broad assumption’ I would win

The only reason Hillary Clinton talks of a war on information is because it's the only one she hadn't tried and her own words ate her fat ass alive on WikiLeaks.

Gladstone:  the people didn't read the WikiLeaks posting

Tell me, Gladstone:  are you starting to get a glimmering of why the election was such a disaster.

There's only one question we have for the Victim.  How much did you get paid for this speech.  If the Wellesley Commencement address was any measure, you made more from one speech than I will see as income for four years.

Peace

Meet Brenda Bakke | Looks Like She Survived "Under Siege 2" After All

The last time we saw Brenda Bakke, she was getting chucked out of a train crossing a train trestle so her future prospects did not look entirely too good.  However, we observe she survived in admirable form for today's episode of Resurrected Hot Babes.

My interest in her was because I thought her name might mean she's German but that isn't true although likely she has some Germanic ancestry which is easy to say since many of us do.

When you see a sign for Survey Party tattooed on her leg, you know you have found the Hollywood Ideal in a woman who just doesn't give a fuck what you think.

The Ongoing Hoax of Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana could help alleviate period pain for women in the state of New York © Tomas Bravo / Reuters

A New York politician is leading a campaign to allow women in the US state to treat menstrual cramps with medical marijuana.

Linda Rosenthal, a member of the New York State Assembly, has called for painful periods to be placed alongside epilepsy and multiple sclerosis on a list of conditions whose sufferers are eligible to buy medical marijuana.

“This is a woman’s health issue,” said Rosenthal in an interview with Newsweek. “Men have really been [the ones] who’ve run state houses, governorships, presidencies, and some issues that are just about women have gotten shortchanged.”

RT:  Let women use medical cannabis to ease period pain, says NY Democrat

Lord, Lord, it's a women's health issue and surely you (cough) know that's true.

After blowin' the ganja as heavily as was practical for the last fifty years and having suffered serious chronic pain ever since due to multiple orthopedic problems from bike crashes and other accidents.

The Rockhouse has never observed any analgesic effect except in the mildest way although it was slightly stronger when reduced to a salve instead.  Corpofreaks pitch it will save you from agony but it's bloody rubbish and it's not long before they will demand the right to use it at work.  I know agony and it doesn't do jack shit for it.

There are no analgesics in my life beyond aspirin and I won't have it any other way.  Mama didn't raise no junkies although Vicodin almost got me.  I was getting quite a bit of dental work and was frequently prescribed Vicodin as a door prize.  Typically any analgesic won't be needed for more than a few days but dentists invariably prescribe two weeks worth of it so collections can build up quickly even when there was no intention to build such a collection.

Mystery Lady saw it was starting to string and at first I refused to accept it but she was right and I finally saw it, never to touch any Big Pharma poison again.  That gift from her has never failed me and things may hurt but they don't suck my soul into some black hell concocted by corporate medicine.

It would be swell if the ganja could be a substitute but it isn't even close and the pitch that it does anything about pain is just another corporate hoax.  Marijuana has exceptional powers in other ways but I couldn't care less if you use it ... I don't make a dime on it.

"The Cock Only Knows One Song" #Poetry

The cock crows in the morning
starting with the feeding for the day
and I wondered if I'm that predictable
but it isn't quite that way
since I can go out later in the morning
bringing water before Toby's last drop
and I still hear that fucking rooster
It doesn't ever stop

So now there's Trump the Rooster
and he always crows the same
when he doesn't know another song
and he only lives for pain
The ache lives inside him
and won't ever go away
when hypocrisy is so blatant
it never needs to say

"I hate myself for living
and lying about what I do
for using the Lord as straight man
as I fake his act for you
but I'm aware it's terribly shallow
and doesn't mean a thing
since one thing I never ever want
is to hear any caged bird sing"

That's fine for Trump the Rooster
such cocks don't ever change
He sings, "ass, grass, or cash"
in his only vocal range
and you must sing that song
to ever join his stage
The cock calls out to everyone
join my rage, join my rage
