When there is news the world really doesn't need, you can always count on CNN to bring it to you and today they ask the deepest of philosophical questions in When a Facebook Friend Dies.
Perhaps you wonder what may happen so let's take it to a multiple choice:
A) Your friend goes to Facebook Heaven
B) Dunkin' Donuts loses a customer
C) The average credit rating of the United States goes up
D) All of the above
The article was written in the classically hyper-dramatic style of social networks as if it's important to convince everyone that you give a fuck about someone you only know on Facebook. This 'dearly beloved' friend is dying and you never even met the person. There's sure no way to top a tragedy like that!
Maybe you could console yourself with Dunkin' Donut's latest obscenity, the Donut, Bacon, and Egg sandwich. Try a few of these and you won't be worrying about friends dying on Facebook as you will be planted with them. (Boston Herald: Dunkin’ Donuts launches bacon, egg and glazed doughnut sandwich)
In a recent psychological profile of Facebook users derived from a survey of people who really do use that demonic system, it was discovered that the majority are overweight, have poor credit ratings, and have low self-esteem. Now ain't that a shocker (laughs).
The quick read is that the object was to determine what Facebook does for self-esteem and, not surprisingly, the answer is nothing good. (PsychCentral: Facebook, Happiness and Self-Esteem)
Here's another that's somewhat interesting in that self-esteem may increase if you focus on your own Facebook profile but will go down in you focus on the profiles of others. (Bulldog Reporter: Social Psychology: Social Media May Inflate Self-Esteem and Reduce Self-Control --- New Research Explores Facebook Behavior and How it Relates to Users' Self-Control, Body-Mass Indexes and Credit-card Debt)
In parallel with this another study revealed that suicide is now the reason for more deaths than auto accidents in the United States. Since the U.S. population hasn't significantly increased and there's no reported basis for an organic cause for an increase in clinical depression, likely the increases come from situational problems (e.g. financial problems, romance problems, etc). Inasmuch as Facebook appears to exacerbate problems such as low self-esteem, it would be interesting to know how much of a factor it plays in the increased number of suicides. (New York Times: Suicide Rates Rise Sharply in U.S.)
No, I don't think this is funny but rather I find it pitiful. I have hated Facebook ever since I saw what Bibi did with it. That the people she swayed were weak-minded and have little to no capacity for inductive reasoning really doesn't matter much but it is illustrative of how easy it is to manipulate a herd population, particularly with the aid of Facebook and perhaps social networks in general.
(Ed: So why use it?)
Some of the people on there are real. The percentage isn't high as most just rant about the offenses of the opposing political party or post things to show how intelligent and clever they are but still there are good people out there. The ones that amuse me the most are those who give advice to others via Facebook. As if advice from someone who is chained to Facebook has the faintest value whatsoever!
